Ryan Reynolds has explained how his big cameo role in his new comedy Free Guy came to be, revealing that the film has a slew of Easter eggs for fans.

When Guy (Reynolds), a background video-game character, meets the uber-cool Molotov Girl, an avatar for game programmer Millie, he transforms from a mild-mannered bank teller to a heroic sensation in a chaotic “Grand Theft Auto”-style online terrain.

Reynolds told Wired how he enlisted the support of friends, pulled off spectacular stunts, and used Disney themes to help take the movie to the next level.

“When we got a scene that we felt might have been perfect, we always thought, ‘OK, now it has to be 30 percent better than perfect,'” he explained.

The Chris Evans cameo is perhaps the most surprising of all. Guy fights a beefed-up version of himself in the film’s end, utilizing one of Marvel’s most renowned weapons: Captain America’s shield, to rescue his video game world. When he does, the in-game combat smash fades to Evans in a coffee shop, watching a webcast. “What the shit?” shouts the actor who has been portraying Steve Rogers for a decade. One of the most important favors Reynolds requested was Evans’ capture. “He was in Boston and I texted him,” Reynolds says, “and being the complete gentleman and stud that he is, he just got in his car, came down, and we had him in and out in under seven minutes.”

Reynolds, on the other hand, acknowledges that it wasn’t one of Evans’ actual movie shields: he didn’t know whether Disney (who bought 20th Century Fox in 2019 while “Free Guy” was in pre-production) “would say 100 percent yes until after we shot it until after we shot it. So we were leaving room to make that shield something else if we had to.” The scene in which Guy wields a lightsaber against Dude and the “Star Wars” theme plays was also approved by the Mouse House.

Hugh Jackman, Channing Tatum, John Krasinski, Tina Fey, and even Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson make guest appearances with Evans.
