Actress Sally Field, known for her Oscar-winning performances, revealed in her memoir, “In Pieces,” details about the alleged sexual abuse she experienced as a child from her stepfather, as well as sexual misconduct from a partner and a director.

Field, 71, also shared about her relationship with late actor Burt Reynolds, who died in 2018.

Though their relationship was widely seen as blissful, she painted Reynolds as controlling and shared that the relationship was “hurtful” to her.

Field spoke to the New York Times, admitting that she was “trying to make it work this time” with Reynolds after experiencing abuse in her childhood from her stepfather, Jock Mahoney, a stuntman and actor.

Field also shared that Reynolds was using drugs during the filming of their movie, “Smokey and the Bandit,” revealing that he used Percodan, Valium, and barbiturates.

She also mentioned Reynolds receiving “mysterious injections to his chest.”

Field set up an appointment for Reynolds at the Miami Heart Institute, but when she tried to get him treatment for stress and anxiety, he dismissed her claims, calling it “self-delusional poppycock.”

Reynolds’s ex-wife, Loni Anderson, detailed Reynolds’s drug use in her memoir and shared that it led to physical abuse on her body, except for her face.

Field expressed relief that Reynolds would never read her memoir or know what she wrote about him.

“This would hurt him,” she admitted.

“I felt glad that he wasn’t going to read it, he wasn’t going to be asked about it, and he wasn’t going to have to defend himself or lash out, which he probably would have. I did not want to hurt him any further.”

Field shared that she questioned herself until the last minute about whether she should “just pull this back” and “change my mind.”

She said that her book would have been much easier if she had only felt one thing towards Mahoney, but he wasn’t cruel and frightening all the time.

She described him as being “magical, the Pied Piper, with our family as his entranced followers.”

Field also talked about being summoned to Mahoney’s bedroom alone and feeling both helpless and powerful.

Her mother divorced Mahoney in 1968, and he died in 1989.

Field also shared an encounter she had in 1968 with singer-songwriter Jimmy Webb.

After smoking a joint filled with hash, she woke up to find him “on top of me, grinding away to another melody.”

Webb responded to the paper, saying that they dated and did what 22-year-olds did in the late ’60s and had great memories of their times together.

Field also talked about a #MeToo moment when auditioning for her role in the 1976 feature “Stay Hungry” when the film’s director, Bob Rafelson, told her he couldn’t “hire anyone who doesn’t kiss good enough.”

So, she kissed him and got the job.

For his part, Rafelson told the NYT: “It’s totally untrue. That’s the first I’ve ever heard of this. I didn’t make anybody kiss me in order to get any part.”

Field’s book also talks about a secret abortion she had in Tijuana at age 17.

Despite the candid revelations, the NYT reported that Field was reluctant to offer her book as “a paradigm for others who might want to disclose their survival narratives” in the era of #MeToo.

“People should tell whatever story they want to tell,” Field told the NYT.

“This is just my story, and it happened the way it happened.”

Field shared that outrage at the abuses others have suffered is warranted, but the stage we are in now “is the first part of it, it’s not the fix.

Outrage has to come first, and it can’t just be quieted and go away.”

Field’s book also covers the topic of the #MeToo movement.

She says that her memoir proves that the movement is overdue, as it is about time for women to speak out against abuse and harassment. However, she also feels that the #MeToo movement is only the beginning of change.

She told the NYT, “This is the first part of it, it’s not the fix.”

Field also talked about her personal life. She has three sons from two marriages that both ended in divorce.

She shared that her marriages failed due to her difficulty in trusting men.

“I’m very leery of men because they have the power to hurt me in ways that I don’t want to be hurt,” Field said.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Field has remained active in Hollywood.

She starred in the critically acclaimed movie, “Hello, My Name is Doris” in 2015, which earned her a Screen Actors Guild nomination.

She also starred in the hit Netflix series, “Maniac,” in 2018.

Field says that writing her memoir was a healing process for her.

She hopes that her story will inspire others to share their experiences and speak out against abuse and harassment.

She also expressed that her story shows that healing is possible.

“I hope my story will encourage other people to talk about their experiences and find ways to heal,” Field said.

The actress has received support from fellow celebrities after sharing her story.

Director Ava DuVernay tweeted, “Thank you, Sally Field, for your bravery and your truth.

This is one of the reasons why women don’t speak up sooner.

They know it will hurt their families, their friends, their careers. And yet you still spoke up. Brava.”

Actress Reese Witherspoon also tweeted, “Thank you, Sally Field, for your honesty and your bravery.

You are a trailblazer, and your courage will inspire others to speak up.”

Field’s memoir, “In Pieces,” was released on September 18, 2018.

The book has received critical acclaim for its raw and honest portrayal of her life.

The New York Times named it one of the 10 best books of 2018. Field hopes that her story will help others to find the courage to speak out and bring about change.

“I hope that the book will inspire people to tell their own stories and bring about change,” Field said.
