Lana Wachowski, the director of The Matrix Resurrections, recently discussed how Keanu Reeves reacted after watching the forthcoming movie. The Matrix Resurrections is the fourth installment in the Matrix series and the first since The Matrix: Revolutions in 2003. Keanu Reeves as Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss as Trinity, as well as other characters from earlier films including Jada Pinkett Smith’s Niobe and Lambert Wilson’s Merovingian, return in Resurrections. Laurence Fishburne, who played Morpheus in the original trilogy, will not be reprising his role. The teaser for Resurrections appears to reveal that Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will portray a younger Morpheus in the film.

Despite their characters’ deaths in Revolutions, Neo and Trinity were seen kicking ass and taking names in the recently released teaser. Lana Wachowski’s highly anticipated sequel, The Matrix Resurrections, is just a few months away, and she revealed Reeves’ reaction after watching it. She stated it this way:

“We showed the film to Keanu, and he really was blown away by it, and he said something that was typically Keanu, where it’s incredibly insightful. And he’s just sort of sitting there, and you don’t expect some incredible revelation to come out of him at that moment, like casual brilliance just kind of rolls off of Keanu. And he was just sitting there, and he goes, ‘Twenty years ago you told a story in which you described the coming twenty years and the problems of the nature of digital, virtual life and how it was going to impact us and how we think about it, and gave us a frame to be able to think about it and talk about it. And you took the same character and the same stories and the same stuff, and somehow you made it about the next twenty years.’ And he was like, ‘How did you do that?'”

Though it appeared that the moderator was seeking for more information, Wachowski left Reeves’ final question hanging, and she was clearly not going to divulge how the next film pulls it off. Viewers may not know the intricacies of the narrative since the plot is kept under wraps, but it’s apparent that The Matrix Resurrections has found a way to adapt the material for current audiences. The original Matrix picture was groundbreaking when it was released, not just for its action sequences but also for how it utilized technology and its implications for the future. Given Reeves’ statements, The Matrix Resurrections appears to be doing the same thing while leveraging our current technological condition as a springboard.

The 57-year-old actor is adored for both his critically praised performances in films like John Wick and his flamboyant demeanor. And, based on Lana Wachowski’s recent narrative about The Matrix Resurrections, he appears to be a great partner.

On Twitter alone, the Matrix Resurrections trailer has been seen over 8 million times.

The Matrix blew audiences away when it was released in 1999, establishing its place in the cultural zeitgeist. It was able to deliver action sequences beyond anything spectators had ever seen before, but it also had symbolic overtones as an allegorical narrative that could be read through a variety of lenses, with many pointing to Jesus’ story. With a title like Resurrections, the next film appears to be continuing the practice of adding profound subtext with an eye toward the future, which is bolstered by Reeves’ statements about the franchise’s fresh breath on life using the same characters and trappings. As the film’s premiere date approaches, more information are expected to emerge, and fans can see The Matrix Resurrections in cinemas and on HBO Max on December 22nd.
