Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock met during the production of the 1994 picture Speed. They went on to become close friends and co-star in another film, the 2006 romantic comedy The Lake House. Despite being a terrific on-screen match, Reeves and Bullock never dated in real life. But it doesn’t mean they weren’t interested in dating each other.

Sandra recently spoke with Esquire about Keanu’s December 2021 cover story, regaling the magazine with anecdotes of Keanu’s friendship and listening skills.

Sandra was asked if she was ever more than friends with Keanu during the profile.

“Nope. But who knows? Keanu’s a guy who, I feel like, is friends with every woman he’s ever dated. I don’t think there’s anyone who has something horrible to say about him,” Sandra told magazine. “So maybe we could have survived. I don’t know. But we didn’t have to survive anything. We just get to grow up together on parallel roads and tip our hats and meet for a dinner and try to work together. And the longer time goes on, the more in awe I am of the human being. Would I have been able to say that if he had dumped me and made me angry? Probably not.”

Bullock told Esquire that Reeves is a “listener” and it “drives. People. Crazy.” She told a story about how, early in their friendship, she told the Matrix actor that she had never had champagne or truffles. A few days later, he arrived at her house on his motorbike, with champagne, truffles, and flowers.

“That’s what I mean that it drives you crazy,” she said. “When I first met him, I would spend as much time as I could filling a silence, just to feel comfortable. And the more I jibber-jabbered on, the quieter he would get. And I thought, I don’t understand what’s happening! He’s looking at me with eyes of confusion. He’s quiet. Did I say something to offend him? And then a day or two later, he would arrive with a note or a little package, saying, ‘I thought about what you said.’ And he would have his response.”

Meanwhile, Keanu tells Esquire that he aspires to work with Sandra again someday. “She’s such a wonderful artist and person,” he gushed. “And, you know, I think we have good chemistry. And it would be really exciting and interesting to get the chance to perform with her again.” The buddies’ latest denial of a relationship rumor comes after they claimed in separate appearances on “Ellen” that they developed crushes on each other while filming “Speed.”

Bullock was quizzed about her experiences of working on the 1994 action film during an interview on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2018. “I think about how sweet Keanu Reeves was and how handsome he was,” she said. “It was hard for me to really be serious. He would look at me and I would be like [giggles].”

When asked if they dated, she laughed and responded, “Never dated him. There was something about me that I guess he didn’t like.” She added, “I think we’re probably friends for that long because we didn’t.”

Keanu appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in May 2019 and viewed a tape of Sandra confessing to having a crush on him while they were working together.

“She obviously didn’t know I had a crush on her either,” he said after seeing the video.

Ellen DeGeneres asked the John Wick star about why they never dated despite having mutual affections on one other. “We were working,” Keanu said, smiling.
