Henry Cavill, the actor best known for playing Superman in the DC Cinematic Universe, has announced that he will no longer be reprising the role.
Cavill made the announcement on Wednesday via his Instagram account, which has 22.9 million followers.
The news has upset many fans of the actor and the character, who had hoped to see Cavill continue in the role. Some have even speculated that there may be a lawsuit over the matter.
Cavill’s departure from the Superman role comes just a few months after he announced that he would be leaving his role as Geralt of Rivia in the hit Netflix show The Witcher.
Cavill had played the monster-hunting Geralt for three seasons, and his final scenes as the character will air in the upcoming third season.
Liam Hemsworth will be taking over the role in the fourth season.

Cavill’s departure from The Witcher was seen as a surprise by many, as the actor was known to be a big fan of the book series upon which the show is based.
Some have speculated that Cavill left the show in order to focus on his role as Superman, and that he may have been disappointed by the direction the show was taking.
In a statement on Instagram, Cavill said: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4.
“In my stead, the fantastic Mr. Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam’s take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.
“Liam, good sir, this character has such a wonderful depth to him, enjoy diving in and seeing what you can find.”
Cavill’s departure from The Witcher and his subsequent departure from the Superman role have both come in the wake of major changes at DC Films.
James Gunn and Peter Safran were brought on as the new heads of the company at the end of October, just days before Cavill announced that he would be leaving The Witcher.
Fans of Cavill and The Witcher have expressed frustration and disappointment at the news of his departure from both roles.
Many have tweeted their support for the actor, with some even calling for a boycott of DC Films.
One fan tweeted: “Henry Cavill loved The Witcher but he clearly wanted the studio to respect the book material and it must have disappointed him to see them mock it. He ended up eventually leaving it behind for Superman only for DC to drop him again within 2 months. This man deserved better.”
Another tweeted: “If i were Henry Cavill right now, I’d be so angry, so embarrassed and probably firing my manager and agency right now. This really could damage the dude’s career, he just dropped Witcher too. Would he of done that if he knew Superman wasn’t coming?”
A third fan tweeted: “Wait so Henry Cavill quit the Witcher show that was basically the Henry Cavill Show in order to act in the new Superman movie but didn’t actually get a commitment from the Superman movie people & now theyre not casting him woow anyway heres an agent with an opening for new client.”
In his statement, Cavill said: “After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life.
“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build.”
Cavill went on to address his fans, saying: “I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and happiest of fortunes.
“Those who have been by my side through the years, we can mourn for a bit. But then we must remember…. Superman is still around.
“Everything he stands for still exists, and the examples he sets for us are still there!
“My turn to wear the cape has passed, but what Superman stands for never will. It’s been a fun ride with you all, onwards and upwards!”
Shortly after Cavill’s announcement, James Gunn, the head of DC Films, took to Twitter to provide more information about the future of the Superman character.
Gunn said: “Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over-the-moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.
“Among those on the slate is Superman. In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.
“But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future.”
Gunn also revealed that he is writing the new Superman movie, but it is not yet clear who will direct.
In response to a question from a fan, Gunn said: “I am writing (and have been for a while). We don’t know who is directing yet.”
Another fan asked if the movie would be an “origin movie” like Man of Steel, to which Gunn replied: “No way.”
Ben Affleck has also expressed interest in directing a DC superhero movie, though it is unclear which one.
Gunn said: “Met with Ben yesterday precisely because he wants to direct & we want him to direct; we just have to find the right project.”
