The DC live-action universe is a constantly shifting place, as Warner Bros. adjusts its timetable based on each new release. Following the underwhelming success of Justice League, the DCEU’s original goals have shifted significantly. The company shifted its focus away from crossover-heavy ensemble productions and toward director-driven storytelling, and Ben Affleck left his position as Batman. There were speculations that Henry Cavill might also resign as Superman, but it currently appears that he hasn’t done so.

“The cape is in the closet. It’s still mine,” Cavill says in a lengthy interview with Men’s Health on his career in general and Netflix’s The Witcher in particular.

During the interview, Henry Cavill also said that he almost reprised his role as Superman for a small appearance in Zachary Levi’s debut film as Shazam, but was unable to do so owing to a scheduling issue created by Mission: Impossible – Fallout. The Justice League actor went on to say that he hasn’t “given up the role” and that there’s still a lot more to be done with the character.

“I’m not just going to sit quietly in the dark as all this stuff is going on,” Cavill told Men’s Health. “I’ve not given up the role.”

He added, “There’s a lot I have to give for Superman yet. A lot of storytelling to do. A lot of real, true depths to the honesty of the character I want to get into. I want to reflect the comic books. That’s important to me. There’s a lot of justice to be done for Superman. The status is: You’ll see.”

As far as we know, WB has no plans for another Man of Steel film, but things might change. Perhaps Cavill is in discussions with the studio, trying to work out a deal. I’m hoping he is! Cavill was a fantastic Superman. He was a fantastic match for the role, and I’d love to see him reprise it in a new film.

The actor, who will soon be seen as Geralt in the Witcher Netflix series, also weighed in on some of his more recent DCEU projects. He described Man of Steel as a “great starting point… I don’t think I’d change anything,” while Batman v Superman was “very much a Batman movie.”

On Justice League, where co-stars Ben Affleck and Gal Gadot have called for the release of the alternative Snyder Cut, he was less cordial: “It didn’t work.”

The Witcher will be available on Netflix on December 20th, with a second season already ordered.
