Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth have filed for divorce just a week after announcing their separation.

The Australian actor, 29, filed for divorce from the pop diva, 26, in Los Angeles on Wednesday, according to records obtained by PEOPLE. Hemsworth, who has engaged famous Hollywood divorce attorney Laura Wasser, cited “irreconcilable differences,” according to The Blast. The couple signed a prenuptial agreement before marrying, so a smooth divorce is likely.

Because the former couple does not have any children, the divorce is likely to be quick and painless. A source told PEOPLE the two had already been apart for months.

Cyrus and Hemsworth met in 2009 while filming “The Last Song,” a Nicholas Sparks adaption, and announced their engagement in 2012. In early 2016, she resumed wearing her engagement ring, and the pair married in Tennessee at the end of the year.

A wildfire destroyed a Malibu house occupied by Cyrus and Hemsworth last year. The couple, as well as their animals, were unhurt.

Following reports that the pair had broken up, a spokesperson for Cyrus confirmed the split.

“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” the statement said. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners, and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and [their] careers.

“They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”

On Aug. 10, a spokeswoman for the artist informed the Associated Press that the couple chose to take a break to focus on “themselves and careers,” but that they will remain “dedicated parents to all of their animals they share.”

According to TMZ, Liam Hemsworth is ready to move on following his breakup with the Wrecking Ball singer. When the news of Liam and Miley’s breakup emerged, people were stunned. Miley Cyrus was then seen spending quality time with Kaitlynn Carter in no time. The two were spotted having fun at Italy’s Lake Como. Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth’s breakup sparked claims of infidelity, drugs, and drinking.

Hemsworth finally spoke out about their breakup on Instagram, confirming their divorce and wishing Cyrus “nothing but health and happiness going forward.”
