Peter Dinklage has slammed Disney’s upcoming live-action remake of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, calling it “fucking backwards.”

The Game of Thrones and Cyrano actor, who suffers from achondroplasia, accused Disney of hypocrisy for promoting a racially diverse cast while resorting to harmful stereotypes about disability.

During an appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast, Dinklage claimed, “Literally no offence to anyone but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. You’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me.”

“You’re progressive in one way and you’re still making that f***ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f**k are you doing, man?” he said. “Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soapbox? I guess I’m not loud enough.”

“They were so proud of that, and all love and respect to the actress and the people who thought they were doing the right thing but I’m just like, ‘What are you doing?’”.

The 1937 film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was based on the Brothers Grimm’s 1812 German fairy tale. The dwarfs did not reside in a cave in the original narrative or the Disney picture, but rather in a home.

Snow White is befriended by 17 thieves who dwell in a cave, rather than seven dwarfs who live in a cottage, in various versions of the story, notably in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Dinklage said that if the legend had been given a “cool, progressive spin,” he would have been “all in.”

Disney responded to Dinklage’s comments by saying it was seeking advice to “avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film.”

“To avoid reinforcing stereotypes from the original animated film, we are taking a different approach with these seven characters and have been consulting with members of the dwarfism community,” a spokesperson said in a statement.

“We look forward to sharing more as the film heads into production after a lengthy development period.”

Snow White will be played by Rachel Zegler (West Side Story), while the Evil Queen will be played by Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman 1984). The film is set to be released in 2023.

Dinklage’s most recent part is in Joe Wright’s (‘Anna Karenina’, ‘The Woman in the Window’) version of ‘Cyrano,’ which stars him in the eponymous character in “a heartbreaking love story that transcends time.”
