Transformers: Age of Extinction star Jack Reynor has spoken out about the “problematic” age-gap joke in the 2014 movie.
Reynor played Shane Dyson, a character who was dating Tessa Yeager, the teenage daughter of Cade (Mark Wahlberg) and Nicola Peltz, who was just 17 at the time, while Shane was a mature 20-year-old.
In the film, Shane defends the legality of his relationship with Tessa, a minor played by Peltz, by citing the “Romeo and Juliet law” and adding, “We’ve got a preexisting juvenile foundational relationship, statute 2705-3,” when Cade finds out about the relationship and threatens to call the police.
Reynor felt that it wasn’t his place to comment on the joke that wasn’t originally in the script.
He said, “I was a 21-year-old actor coming in from independent Irish cinema, and it didn’t really feel like my place to comment on what these guys wanted to do.
It’s their film and their responsibility.”
However, he acknowledged that the joke is problematic in today’s #MeToo era.
Before her relationship with Brooklyn Beckham, Peltz had a number of high-profile romances, including ones with Justin Bieber and Gigi and Bella Hadid’s younger brother Anwar.
Peltz and Beckham began dating in 2019 and were engaged in July of the following year.
