On what would have been Heath Ledger’s 40th birthday, Michelle Williams gave fans an update on their 13-year-old daughter Matilda.

Heath, who was renowned for his appearances in 10 Things I Hate About You and The Dark Knight, died in a New York hotel in 2008 after an accidental overdose when Matilda was just two years old.

The 38-year-old Dawson’s Creek actress spoke about her and Ledger’s 13-year-old daughter Matilda hitting puberty during an interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan on Thursday.

“So far, so good,” Williams said, noting that her 13-year-old isn’t causing her any problems. “Every morning we wake up and I look to see if the transformation has happened and if it’s turned into the next level that I keep hearing about, but so far, we’re not there yet.”

Kelly and Ryan joked with Michelle, saying they think she’ll be OK, implying that Matilda may have ‘bypassed’ the tumultuous adolescent transition and may not change at all.

‘I feel like it would’ve turned by now… I mean the personality,’ Kelly explained.

Maltida isn’t “super aware” of her mother’s renowned series since it “hasn’t hit her friend circle,” but she is a major fan of 2017’s The Greatest Showman, in which Williams co-starred with Hugh Jackman.

Although Williams keeps her personal life private, she spoke to Vanity Fair in July 2018 about parenting her daughter without Ledger, who died in 2008.

“I always say to Matilda, ‘Your dad loved me before anybody thought I was talented, or pretty, or had nice clothes,’ ” Williams said.

“When you’re a single parent, and that element of provider and protection is missing, it’s scary… I always say to Matilda, ” she said of raising Matilda after the actor’s death.

Michelle went on to say that she had “never gave up on love” and hoped to find someone who made her feel the same way Heath did. Last year, she married her husband Phil Elverum.

She also confirmed her marriage to musician Phil Elverum to Vanity Fair at the time, stating the pair married in secret in the Adirondacks in front of a few friends and their respective daughters. (Elverum’s first marriage resulted in a daughter.)

Williams remarked of her personal life, “I don’t really want to talk about any of it. But there’s that tease, that lure, that’s like, ‘What if this helps somebody? What if somebody who has always journeyed in this way, who has struggled as much as I struggled, and looked as much as I looked, finds something that helps them?’ Don’t settle. Don’t settle for something that feels like a prison, or is hard, or hurts you,” she shared. “If it doesn’t feel like love, it’s not love.”

After meeting on the set of their 2005 film Brokeback Mountain, she and Ledger dated for three years, albeit they split up five months before his death.

In December 2016, Williams spoke out about Ledger’s death for her Porter magazine cover story. “In all honesty, for pretty much everything else, I feel like I’m a believer in not fighting circumstances, accepting where you are and where you’ve been. In pretty much all senses but one,” she explained. “I would be able to totally go down that line of thinking were it not for Matilda not having her dad. You know, that’s just something that doesn’t … I mean, it just won’t ever be right.”

Her visit on Live With Kelly and Ryan comes after she recently stated that when doing reshoots for All The Money In The World, she and co-star Mark Wahlberg had a large pay disparity.
