Danny Devito is set to join the cast of Disney’s Haunted Mansion, a film based on the iconic Disneyland attraction of the same name.

The cast features LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, and Rosario Dawson, among others. The film will be directed by Justin Simien, who previously directed Dear White People. DeVito has been busy making a sequel to his blockbuster 1988 comedy Twins with co-star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Justin Simien is making his big-budget studio debut with this project, which began filming in New Orleans and Atlanta last week.

It’s impossible to say whether DeVito’s professor is one of the spirits haunting the home. At this time, plot information and exact character profiles are being kept under wraps.

The story follows a mother and son who discover a haunted home and must enlist the assistance of the numerous personalities they meet along the road to uncover the eerie mystery.

Following the underwhelming reception to the Eddie Murphy-starring 2003 film, Disney has been working on a fresh remake of their classic theme park ride for several years.

DeVito is a seasoned comedic actor whose more than 100 credits include roles in iconic 1970s TV series Taxi, significant films such as Romancing the Stone and Batman Returns, and the long-running comedy It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which he has played for the last 15 years.

Since its debut in 1969, the Haunted Mansion has been one of the most popular attractions at any of the Disney Parks. Despite its success, though, The Haunted Mansion has failed to be become a profitable film series.

Girls Trip actress Haddish will play a psychic who is recruited to connect with the spirits in the estate, while Get Out’s Stanfield will play a widower who moves into the home with his family, according to Digital Spy.

Over the years, the project has gone through several stages of development. Guillermo Del Toro, the Oscar-winning filmmaker, was in discussions to helm his version of The Haunted Mansion at one time, with Ryan Gosling in talks to star.

Disney is well aware that films based on the company’s renowned theme park attractions can be profitable. Over the course of its five-film run, the Pirates of the Caribbean series was an incredible blockbuster for Walt Disney Studios, and there have been several rumours about reboots and sequels as the studio searches for ways to keep it alive. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt feature as the lead explorers in Jungle Cruise, which premiered earlier this summer. Despite being available for purchase on Disney+, the film grossed over $106 million in the United States.

Meanwhile, Wilson joins Haunted Mansion following his triumph as Mobius in Marvel’s Loki, while Dawson just starred in Space Jam: A New Legacy.

Fans of the ride may be cautiously optimistic about this new picture, which has an impressive ensemble. The Haunted Mansion’s release date has yet to be determined.
