Elizabeth Olsen, who plays Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has backed Scarlett Johansson in her case against Disney over Black Widow.

In an interview with Jason Sudeikis for Vanity Fair last week, Olsen, 32, lauded her fellow Avengers actress, saying, “I think she’s so tough and literally when I read that I was like, ‘Good for you Scarlett.’”

‘Well, I mean, it is appropriately bad-ass and on brand,’ Sudeikis acknowledged.

Olsen made the remark while responding to a question about if performers were concerned that movies would have a tougher time entering theaters during the epidemic.

She says, “I’m worried about a bunch of things. Not worried on Scarlett’s behalf. But I’m worried about small movies getting the opportunity to be seen in theaters. That was already a thing pre-COVID. I like going to the movies and I don’t necessarily want to see only an Oscar contender or a blockbuster. I would like to see art films and art house theaters. And so I do worry about that, and people having to keep these theaters alive. And I don’t know how financially that works for these theaters. I do hope that there’s some sort of solution that the larger companies are coming together to keep, at least in L.A. this is going to happen.”

In July, Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney, saying that the company violated her contract by making Black Widow available on Disney+ at the same time that movie was released in theaters. According to the lawsuit, Johansson’s pay is contingent on the film’s box office success, and Disney’s choice to go with a “hybrid” distribution resulted in a smaller fee than expected.

“Disney intentionally induced Marvel’s breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel,” the suit said.

Disney responded, stating: ‘Disney has fully complied with Ms. Johansson’s contract and furthermore, the release of Black Widow on Disney+ with Premier Access has significantly enhanced her ability to earn additional compensation on top of the $20M she has received to date.’

Both Olsen and Johansson play female characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Olsen portraying Wanda Maximoff in multiple Avengers films as well as her own Disney+ series with on-screen spouse Vision (Paul Bettany).

Given that they starred together in the tiny 2017 TIFF selection “Kodachrome,” which was picked up for distribution by Netflix, it’s natural that Olsen and Sudeikis were having this conversation. That’s a great example of a film that may benefit from arthouse screenings to spread the word, but a streaming release could cause it to be buried in a sea of stuff. On the other hand, it’s far more difficult to get a small video like that created in the first place without the help of a streamer.

Only Olsen and Dave Bautista from Guardians of the Galaxy have responded to the complaint thus far. Bautista remained silent on the issue. “Told em they should’ve made a #Drax movie but noooooo!” he tweeted.
