Jason Sudeikis won best actor in a comedy series for his main role in “Ted Lasso.”

During his winning speech, Sudeikis, said, “Heck of a year. I would say this show is about family, this show is about mentors and teachers, this show is about teammates. And I wouldn’t be here without those three.” Among the people Sudeikis proceeded to thank were his parents, sisters, children, and the not-in-his-seat-at-the-moment Lorne Michaels, “who went to go take a dump now, perfect,” joked Sudeikis of his former boss at Saturday Night Live. “He’s going to get home; he’s going to watch it. He loves watching the Emmys at home. It’s fine, it’s fine. Which home is the big question?”

“I’m only as good as you guys make me look,” Sudeikis said of his Lasso co-stars. “I’m only as good as you guys make me look, and so really it means the world to me to be up here and just be a mirror of what you guys give to me and we reflect back and forth on each other.”

Over the previous several weeks, the win had been a foregone conclusion, with IndieWire’s Ben Travers stating that the prize was the actor’s to lose. Last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys saw the Apple TV+ series win Best Comedy Series, as well as Casting, Sound Mixing, and Single-Camera Picture Editing. The series received a total of 17 nominations, including nods for main actor Jason Sudeikis, as well as supporting performers Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Brendan Hunt.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences also honored Ted Lasso, concluding a spectacular run for the series about an unskilled American soccer coach who lands a position in English sport.

“It’s a big team win,” Sudeikis said backstage of the Apple TV+ series, which won four awards including best comedy series. “That’s the best one. That’s the one we get to all walk away with. That’s the one we are responsible for.”

Sudeikis had never been nominated for an Emmy until this year, when he received four nods for his numerous roles in Apple TV+’s heartwarming comedy. Sudeikis, who was nominated for two distinct episodes, lost out in the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series category earlier in the night. He and the rest of the Lasso crew are also competing for the Outstanding Comedy Series award, which has yet to be revealed.

Sudeikis has utilized his show’s platform to discuss causes that are important to him. He made headlines earlier this year at the Season 2 premiere of “Ted Lasso” in a basic black hoodie. The sweater was designed to show support for black soccer players in England. “And our show is rooted in both, you know, despising things like bullying and racism or whatnot, but it also is rooted and takes place in London, in England. And so yeah, it was just our way to use this big fancy premiere to spotlight them and let them know we got their back,” Sudeikis said during an appearance on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”

Sudeikis said celebrating with Hannah Waddingham and Brett Goldstein – who Emmys for best supporting actress and actor in a comedy series – was a “fantastic” moment for him.

Sudeikis beat Anthony Anderson of Black-ish, Michael Douglas of The Kominsky Method, William H. Macy of Shameless, and his old Saturday Night Live castmate, Kenan Thompson of Kenan (what’s up with that, indeed).

The second season of “Ted Lasso” is now available on Apple TV+, and there has been a lot of discussion on social media regarding the tone of the new season. “‘Ted Lasso’ still feels like ‘Ted Lasso,’ and while there will be a lot more to say about the season once everyone has seen it, for now, that’s an incredible relief — and an impressive triumph,” wrote Ben Travers of IndieWire in his “A-” assessment of the season.
