Elizabeth Olsen is Getting Canceled Over Racism Accusations

Elizabeth Olsen isn’t someone you’d expect to get caught up in the cancel culture net, yet it appears that is exactly what is happening to her. The WandaVision actor, who is starring in her first film since assuming the role of Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron, has made racist remarks, according to some fans. There has been some criticism of Olsen’s choice of words in portraying her character.

As you may know, the 31-year-old doesn’t use social media, since deactivating her Instagram account last year when Marvel fans began flooding all of her past posts to attack her for not paying respect to co-star Chadwick Boseman fast enough after his death, which is absolutely insane.

Fans took notice of Olsen’s recent appearance with Vanity Fair’s Still Watching podcast, which sparked the current backlash.

In the aforementioned interview, Elizabeth allegedly hurled a racial slur towards Wanda Maximoff, referring to her as a “gypsy.” Romani people find the word insulting and demeaning. Though it may have formerly been an appropriate description of a group of individuals, it is now widely used as a slur against many groups. The usage of the term by Olsen was mocked. Prior to the event, Elizabeth is claimed to have stated the same thing about the character in a 2015 interview with Graham Norton, who even told her she shouldn’t use that phrase.

However, it appears that the actress has committed another blunder, as social media users have converged on her in double quick time.

“No one is trying to cancel ur fav,” one person said. “We just want her to wake tf up and apologize for being racist and ignorant. Elizabeth Olsen hun wake tf up.”

Another added, “so where are the elizabeth olsen stans now saying ‘she’s not racist she didn’t know gypsy was a slur’ after graham norton told her it was and now she used it again. how are you going to defend her now? i’m curious.”

“Insults. In 2015 Elizabeth Olsen used slurs to talk about Wanda,” another user wrote adding, “So why was she using slurs recently during an interview with WandaVision? Because she’s a disgusting racist.”

“elizabeth olsen shouldn’t have used the g slur as it’s racist and meant to oppress romani people and she needs to be held accountable for her words and actions” =\= “i think elizabeth olsen deserves to be forever cancelled and never spoken of again, ” one twitter user said.

Another questioned, “So where are the Elizabeth Olsen fans who say ‘she’s not racist, she didn’t know the gypsy was an insult’ after Graham Norton told her she was and now she uses to the word again. How are you going to defend it now? I’m curious.”

It’ll be fascinating to see if this has a significant impact on Elizabeth Olsen’s job as Wanda Maximoff, or her overall stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Given that no one from the studio has addressed it and that she is a key figure in Marvel’s Phase Four, I expect an apology and then a distancing from the statements. That isn’t to argue that the comments or the repeated use of an insulting phrase are “okay,” but it appears to be regular operating procedure in Hollywood these days.

Elizabeth Olsen is currently starring in WandaVision, a film that kicked off Phase Four. It has received rave reviews and gives the Marvel Cinematic Universe a completely new appearance and feel. It’s evident that Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will play a larger part in the cosmos in the future, potentially even as a villain. It’s an intriguing move for the character and the world, which may have been building for years. Despite her great talents, the character has been relegated to the background in many of the Avengers films, but she is expected to take center stage in the future.
