Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has received praise for publicly disclosing his struggle with depression.

One month after writing on Instagram about saving his mother from a suicide attempt, the semi-retired wrestler turned actor spoke to The Express about how the tragedy had a significant influence on his own mental health.

He stated, “Struggle and pain is real. I was devastated and depressed.”

Johnson told the British source, “I reached a point where I didn’t want to do a thing or go anywhere,” alluding to a period when he was a teenager. “I was crying constantly.”

Johnson wrote on Instagram on Feb. 1 about watching his mother, Ata, walk into oncoming traffic on Interstate 65 in Nashville shortly after they were evicted from their residence when he was 15 years old.

“Big rigs and cars swerving outta the way not to hit her. I grabbed her and pulled her back on the gravel shoulder of the road,” Johnson wrote. “What’s crazy about that suicide attempt is to this day, she has no recollection of it whatsoever. Probably best she doesn’t.”

Johnson was able to pull his mother to the side of the road, and the two of them were able to avoid harm.

However, he fell into a deep depression for several years, which was exacerbated by injuries that ended his football career and a break-up with a lover.

“We both got healed,” Johnson said of himself and his mother, “but we’ve got to do our best to pay attention when other people are pain.”

“We have to help them through it and remind them they are not alone.”

The tale about his mother surfaced as he was filming the forthcoming season of Ballers,

His character in the HBO series pays a visit to the cemetery of a buddy who committed suicide.

He posted on social media, “Shits of a scene to shoot — didn’t like it — but it did reminder that we always gotta do our best to really pay attention when people are in pain. Help ‘em thru it, get ‘em talkin’ about the struggle and remind ‘em that they’re not alone. We got lucky that day when I was 15, and that ain’t always the case.”

He tweeted in reaction to the appreciation he has gotten since speaking out: “Thank you. We all go thru [sic] the sludge/s**t and depression never discriminates. Took me a long time to realise it but the key is to not be afraid to open up. Especially us dudes have a tendency to keep it in. You’re not alone.”
