Dwayne Johnson has been asked to return to the Fast & Furious franchise for the tenth and final installment.

On Sunday, Vin Diesel took to Instagram to openly voice his desire for Johnson to return as Agent Lucas Hobbs in the upcoming film, which is slated to be the first of a two-part franchise finale.

“My little brother Dwayne… the time has come. The world awaits the finale of Fast 10,” Vin wrote. “As you know, my children refer to you as Uncle Dwayne in my house.”

“There is not a holiday that goes by that they and you don’t send well wishes… but the time has come. Legacy awaits.”

He continued, “I told you years ago that I was going to fulfill my promise to Pablo. I swore that we would reach and manifest the best Fast in the finale that is 10! I say this out of love… but you must show up, do not leave the franchise idle you have a very important role to play. Hobbs can’t be played by no other. I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny.”

Since their collaboration on The Fate of the Furious in 2016, The Rock and Vin have been at odds.

The conflict has been well-documented (and preserved on social media, with The Rock calling out a “chicken shit” and “candy ass” co-star), and Diesel has admitted to his part in inciting tension on set. The “Fast” actor and producer revealed in a recent Men’s Health feature that the “tough love” he offered The Rock in order to coax a great performance out of him is what caused the reported friction. “The Hobbs character was a difficult character to embody,” Diesel noted at the time. “My approach at the time was a lot of tough love to assist in getting that performance where it needed to be. As a producer to say, ‘Okay, we’re going to take Dwayne Johnson, who’s associated with wrestling, and we’re going to force this cinematic world, audience members, to regard his character as someone that they don’t know.’”

Almost “every single crew member found their way to me and either quietly thanked me or sent me a note,” The Rock revealed in an interview with Vanity Fair last month.

He also stated that openly voicing his opinions “was not the right thing to do.”

He went on to say that the two met to try to work out their disagreements.

“Well, there was a meeting,” he said, adding: “I wouldn’t call it a peaceful meeting. I would call it a meeting of clarity. He and I had a good chat in my trailer, and it was out of that chat that it really became just crystal clear that we are two separate ends of the spectrum. And agreed to leave it there.”

Johnson first appeared in the “Fast & Furious” franchise in 2011, in the film “Fast Five,” as Diplomatic Security Service agent Lucas Hobbs. Hobbs initially opposes Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto and his family of gearhead heroes, but subsequently joins the gang in later installments. Johnson bowed out of the latest episode of the “Fast & Furious” franchise, this summer’s “F9: The Fast Saga,” and instead starred in his own spin-off with Jason Statham, 2019’s “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.”

Following repeated delays caused by the pandemic, the ninth Fast & Furious film was released early this year.
