Scarlett Johannson has taken a break from the camera to record her own audiobook adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland for Audible.

Vanessa Johannson, an actor and audiobook narrator, has joined her in the project and is directing it.

Vanessa, 36, tells PEOPLE that cooperating with her sister was “kind of a no-brainer.”

“We’re very close and, as you can imagine, have been playing around and doing funny voices since we were little so it was great project for the two of us because we’re so used to inventing together.”

The duo collaborated on the project in the studio, which resulted in a lot of sisterly bonding.

‘There was a lot of laughter, a lot of goofiness happening,’ Vanessa said.

‘The story certainly warrants a lot of that. It’s a total wacky, crazy story – we were like, “Oh my god, that was written for children?!” It’s so out-there, really!’

Scarlett, who won a Tony Award for her performance, had this to say about the experience: “It was a great pleasure to work alongside my sister, Vanessa, to read aloud the great works of Lewis Carroll.

“Having grown up loving the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and reading many books aloud with Vanessa, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to share my love for Alice with an audience.

“I hope that this recording is enjoyed by not only those who are existing fans of the material, but also by new and curious readers, who may just be discovering Carroll’s work for the first time.”

Vanessa, whose audiobook credentials include children’s novels, history, fantasy, biography, fiction, self-development, and more, adds, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is such a deliciously whimsical and curious story. We had such a blast dialoguing during the recording process, thinking about the characters, and creating an audio world for this book. I hope the joy that we experienced together comes across to listeners.”

The audiobook will be released on Audible and Amazon on February 23.
