Scarlett Johansson is under fire once again for her insensitive casting. The actor withdrew from playing a transgender guy, Dante “Tex” Gill after a social media backlash that a cisgender woman had been cast in the role of Dante “Tex” Gill in the upcoming Rub & Tug.

The actress complained about political correctness in art in an interview with As If magazine, saying, “As an actor, I should be able to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job.”

“I feel like it’s a trend in my business and it needs to happen for various social reasons,” she added, describing the criticism as a “trend.” “Yet there are times it does get uncomfortable when it affects the art because I feel art should be free of restrictions.”

Johansson said, “I understand how it’s harder for some, and we all have our own experiences. I think society would be more connected if we just allowed others to have their own feelings and not expect everyone to feel the way we do.”

Johansson later explained that her remark was misinterpreted, saying that “in an ideal world, any actor should be able to play anybody.” According to the rest of her statement, Johansson recognizes that, in the real world, her presence in films like Ghost in the Shell and Rub and Tug may prevent a Japanese or trans actress from getting hired. It starts with A-listers standing aside and letting parts go if we want to see more realistic casting in Hollywood. Take a look at Ryan Murphy’s Pose. It is possible.

Johansson dropped out of the film Rub & Tug in June after being cast as Dante Tex Gill, a trans guy. According to the Hollywood Reporter, she announced at the time, “In light of recent ethical questions surrounding my casting as Dante Tex Gill, I have decided to respectfully withdraw my participation in the project.”

Despite Johansson’s defense of her right to play a transgender character, LGBTQ advocates asked the filmmakers to cast a trans actress in the role instead, and she eventually backed out of the movie.

“Tell them they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman’s reps for comment,” Johansson said in a statement.
