On Sunday, the Golden Globes announced that Queen’s musical Bohemian Rhapsody had won the best film award, beating A Star Is Born, and that Green Book, a 1960s segregation-era road movie, had won the best comedy or musical film. In a night of surprises, Rami Malek won Best Drama Actor for his performance in Bohemian Rhapsody as late Queen leader Freddie Mercury.
During his winning speech, Malek, 37, said, “Thank you to Freddie Mercury for giving me the joy of a lifetime. This is for you, gorgeous.
While many expected Malek to win, it was a surprise when Fox and New Regency’s Bohemian Rhapsody won the best dramatic film award, edging out A Star Is Born. The 76th Golden Globe Awards were held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, and British producer Graham King, a former Martin Scorsese collaborator who has returned spectacularly with his biggest commercial and critical hit in years (Bohemian Rhapsody will cross $750 million at the global box office this week), walked on stage to accept the award for best drama.
While receiving the Golden Globe, King said, “Now, that was unexpected. Thank you so much to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. The power of movies is that it brings us all together. Freddie Mercury and Queen did that so successfully through their music, and that’s what we always wanted to accomplish in the cinemas. To see that magic come alive and to see the incredible response to this film has been truly humbling.”
“I want to thank everyone. A huge thank you to Brian May, Roger Taylor. This my producing partner, ‘Miami Beach.’ Thank you so much for trusting me to put your lives on the screen. I know how tough that is,” he continued. “One person I do want to say deserves a special mention is this guy, Rami Malek, guys. I mean, come on. What a performance. Unbelievable!”
King went on to say something to Mercury. “Thank you for showing us the power of embracing your true self. This one’s for you. Thank you so much,” he said.

Lady Gaga won Best Original Song for Shallow, in her first starring role in a film following a successful music career.
Glenn Close was voted best dramatic actress for SPC’s The Wife, which was perhaps the biggest cinematic surprise of the night in the film categories. When her name was called out, Close, who had never won a Golden Globe before, appeared more shocked than anybody else. When she pushed women to follow their ambitions and mentioned how her mother had “sublimated” herself to her husband and was in her 80s when she told Close she felt she had done nothing in life, she drew the audience to their feet.
Fans of the film “A Star Is Born,” which follows a musician (Cooper) who helps a young singer (Gaga) attain stardom despite his own downward spiral, were quick to criticize the outcomes on Twitter.
“I feel personally hurt from how much A Star Is Born got robbed tonight #GoldenbGlobes,” one user tweeted.
Another Twitter user wondered, “How the f—- did Bohemian Rhapsody win best film at the @goldenglobes? Good film but the singing was fake and the CGI was woeful at the end. #AStarIsBorn was phenomenal with incredible live performances and scintillating acting! GG just made themselves irrelevant.”
“‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ beating ‘A Star Is Born’ at the #GoldenGlobes is a hate crime,” one person said.
“Bradley Cooper poured his heart and soul into this movie and he didn’t get any recognition at all last night!!!” chimed another. “It’s just not on, he should of got at least 1 globe !!! #GoldenGlobes #AStarIsBorn.”
Regardless of the setback, Cooper couldn’t have been more pleased with A Star Is Born when the picture was nominated for so many Golden Globes in December.
“I am very grateful A Star Is Born has touched so many people and to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing our film with such abundance,” he said in a statement at the time. “I’ve wanted to tell stories through film for as long as I can remember and I feel lucky even to have had the opportunity to do that – to be included in a community of such inspiring artists is incredibly humbling. A huge congrats to all of this morning’s nominees and especially to my dear friend, Lady Gaga.”
Bryan Singer, who was famously sacked from the “Bohemian Rhapsody” production in 2017 owing to “unexplained absences from set,” according to Deadline.com, turned to Instagram to congratulate the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for awarding the biopic two Golden Globes.
“What an honor. Thank you @HollywoodForeignPress,” the 53-year-old director, who was not there, captioned.
The top comedy movie acting honors went to Olivia Coleman (The Favourite) and Christian Bale (Vice).
Alfonso Cuarón had a night to remember, winning best director and best foreign language picture for his film ROMA. “Cinema at its best, builds bridges to other cultures,” the Mexican director said, drawing cheers. Two prizes for Netflix’s ROMA and three for Universal’s Green Book (best film – comedy or musical, supporting actor, script) rounded off a successful night for producer-financier Participant Media.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globe Honors are the first major showbiz awards in the run-up to the Oscars in February.
