Christian Bale scorned Richard B. Cheney by delivering an unexpected shout-out to what he said was his inspiration in playing the strong and uncharismatic former vice president in his acceptance speech after winning the Golden Globe award for best actor.

He remarked of his character Dick Cheney in the political parody, “Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration for playing this role.”

He also joked, much to the delight of the crowd, about “cornering the market” on portraying “charisma-free” prominent personalities. “What do you think, Mitch McConnell next? That could be good.”

“To us, Satan is a symbol of pride, liberty, and individualism, and it serves as an external metaphorical projection of our highest personal potential,” The Church of Satan wrote on Twitter shortly after the comment was made. “As Mr Bale’s own talent and skill won him the award, this is fitting.

“Hail Christian! Hail Satan!”

Bale, who was taking home his second Golden Globe, praised his children and wife for teaching him that “less is more.”

“She knows the dumb crap that can come out of my mouth at times. I can sink and ruin a perfectly good movie and so-so career in one speech. So thank you for that advice, my love.”

Bale also joked about director Adam McKay casting him as Cheney: “He said, ‘I have to find somebody that can be absolutely charisma-free and reviled by everybody, so we wanted Christian Bale.’”

While Satanists applauded Bale’s Golden Globe triumph, not everyone was pleased: Congresswoman Liz Cheney, the former vice president’s daughter, tweeted an article regarding Bale’s alleged attack on family members in 2008. “Satan probably inspired him to do this, too,” she joked.

The Church of Satan’s Twitter account also took a position on a specific superhero, referring to Christian Bale’s caped crusader in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy as “the best Batman ever.”

Despite its name, the Church of Satan (not to be confused with the Satanic Temple) does not worship or believe in Satan as a powerful, supernatural, or malevolent creature. Satan, according to the organization, is a “symbol of pride, liberty, and individualism,” as well as a projection of one’s potential. Bale won because of his talent and ability, therefore his shout-out was “fitting.”

Bale earned an Academy Award and a Golden Globe for his performance in “The Fighter” in 2010. For “American Hustle” and “The Big Short,” he garnered Oscar and Golden Globe nods.
