Kristen Stewart has explained why she abruptly chopped her hair after unveiling a stunning new crop this week.

Kristen has gone through a lot of personal and professional changes in recent years, including coming out and taking on fewer big-budget projects. She’s now shaved her head completely bald.

The actress follows her own rules, whether it’s wearing sneakers on the red carpet or sporting a pink pixie cut.

Stewart plays a mechanical engineer on a rig deep beneath the ocean’s surface in her new film Underwater. According to the trailer, an earthquake rocks the station.

The 26-year-old actress appeared on the Today program on Thursday, March 9, to discuss her dramatic new look with cohosts Savannah Guthrie and Willie Geist.

She was in town to promote her critically praised new psychological thriller Personal Shopper when she was queried about her bright blonde hairstyle.

“I’m doing a movie in a couple of weeks called Underwater and I play a mechanical engineer who is working on an oil rig on the bottom of the ocean floor, so for me it’s practical,” she joked as she explained why less hair meant less fuss on set.

“I mean I’m not going to be able to have touch-ups once I put the helmet on so I must shave my head!”

She also revealed that shaving her head was a combination of getting to know her character and doing something she just felt like doing for herself.

“To be super straight up, I actually did just sort of find it to be a nice excuse to do it because it’s something that I’ve wanted to do for a long time,” she tells Bustle. “I was genuinely just excited to shave my head and bleach it because I thought it looked cool.”

The Twilight actress went on to say that she didn’t have to cut her hair short for the role. But When Eubank, 34, advised that she try out the edgy (and fuss-free!) look, Stewart gladly agreed.

She went on to say that she’d always wanted to be able to touch her head without having to worry about her hair getting in the way, and that it’s given her a new pastime of headbanging.

She scratched her head and said, “I’ve wanted to do this for a long time for novelty’s sake, just because at some point in your life you want to be able to do that.”

“It feels amazing – I just want to headbang all day!”

Short hair provides a lot of flexibility, and as long as Kristen Stewart is satisfied with her appearance, she should go ahead and maintain it. After all, many of us remember how much Kristen Stewart despised having hair extensions when filming Twilight, and she seemed to be more happy with this appearance.

The underwater suits that the cast wears in the film take 20 minutes to get into and another 20 minutes to get out of, according to the actor.
