Being gorgeous is stressful for Charlize Theron.

The 5’10” actress will be featured in the May issue of British GQ, where she says that Pretty people are the first to be turned down in the casting room.

“Jobs with real gravitas go to people that are physically right for them and that’s the end of the story,” she says. “How many roles are out there for the gorgeous, f*cking gown-wearing eight-foot model? When meaty roles come through, I’ve been in the room and pretty people get turned away first.”

Charlize Theron did win her first Academy Award for Best Actress in 2004 for a portrayal that was far from glamorous. The 40-year-old underwent a radical makeover for the 2003 crime thriller Monster, gaining 30 pounds and donning prosthetics to play serial murderer Aileen Wuornos. Charlize earned her second Oscar nomination in 2006 for her performance as a miner in the drama film North Country.

Even when she played a normal-looking individual in Monster, so much focus was placed on her physical change that the actress expressed concern that the audience was losing out on the performance. “The greatest thing I can hope for, which is an impossible thing to hope for because so much emphasis has been put on the transformation, but it’s that people can go see it and get past all that,” Theron said at the time.

She also discussed aging and the double standards that men and women endure.

“We live in a society where women wilt and men age like fine wine,” she says. “And, for a long time, women accepted it. We were waiting for society to change, but now we’re taking leadership. It would be a lie to say there is less worry for women as they get older than there is for men … It feels there’s this unrealistic standard of what a woman is supposed to look like when she’s over 40.”

The South African native immigrated to the United States and now talks with an American accent. South Africans, she claims, find it difficult to comprehend her attachment to the nation.

“I have a very, very strong connection to my country and to its people,” Theron said.

“It’s the mother that might have abandoned me, in a weird way, but not all the way. I’m not having a pity party, but I’m constantly trying to win its love back,” she added.

According to Variety, the Academy Award winner will appear in “The Huntsman: Winter’s War,” out in April.
