Ryan Gosling did not come out of hiding last week to commemorate the tenth anniversary of The Notebook, the tearjerker that catapulted him to stardom. Gosling declined to shill for the famous picture by conducting a few brief junket interviews. Director Nick Cassavetes, on the other hand, was eager to talk about the project and provided VH1 with a few delicious behind-the-scenes details.

According to Cassavetes, Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams had strong on-screen chemistry but also despised one other throughout the production.

The Crazy Stupid Love actor, who portrayed hopeless romantic Noah Calhoun in the film, is said to have urged director Nick Cassavetes to have someone else play his love interest Allie Hamilton.

The blonde actor said he didn’t have any ‘chemistry’ with the redhead, who was barely 25 at the time the picture was shot.

“Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not. And Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick, come here,'” director Nick Cassavetes told VH1. “And he’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off camera with me? … I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.'”

Instead of isolating Gosling and McAdams and separating them, Cassavetes and the producers chose to let them battle it out. So they piled them all into a trailer and let them scream.

“We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other. I walked out,” he remembers. “At that point I was smoking cigarettes. I smoked a cigarette and everybody came out like, ‘All right let’s do this.’ And it got better after that, you know? They had it out.” According to the 55-year-old filmmaker, “I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open.”

Despite the fact that he was able to complete the picture, which has gained a cult following since its debut in 2004, he confesses that the co-stars had issues after their dispute.

He added: “The rest of the film wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”

More than anything else, what creative types want to see from coworkers is enthusiasm. They want to see that the other person is equally involved and prepared to risk all to produce the best possible end result. Rachel McAdams was nearly unknown at the time, so it’s understandable that Ryan Gosling had reservations. Fortunately, he persisted, and the two of them were able to produce a final product that meant a great deal to a large number of people.

Following the completion of the film, Gosling and McAdams began dating; they split in 2008.

Gosling has been married to Eva Mendes, his co-star in The Place Beyond The Pines, for the last three years.

The older Noah was played by James Garner in The Notebook, which marked its tenth anniversary on June 25. Gosling was keen to discuss character traits with the actor since they were portraying the same role. Unfortunately, the 86-year-old cinema icon didn’t share Gosling’s excitement for discussing character options, which included anything from duplicating each other’s mannerisms to matching eye colors.

“Jimmy is one of those kind of actors who’s a no-bulls–t actor from a time gone by,” Cassavetes says of the revered Maverick star to Vh1. “But Ryan finds significance in talking about hairstyles and everything.”
