Prince Charles is the next in line to the British throne if the Queen dies or abdicates.

As a result, his wife, Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, will adopt a new title. However, it seems that her new title will not be Queen Camilla.

In the United Kingdom, The memory of Princess Diana, as well as the fact that Charles and Camilla’s affair was made public, complicates matters significantly. Before Charles and Camilla married in 2005, it was stated that if and when Charles ascends to the throne, Camilla will be recognized as Princess Consort, not Queen. The Prince of Wales’s website has already explained this.

Tom Parker-Bowles, Camilla’s son said “I honestly don’t know if Mum will be called ‘Queen.’ That hasn’t been decided. There are a lot of interesting Sky documentaries about that I’m sure but I honestly don’t know if that’s true.”

The duchess has gone through many different names and titles. She  was born Camilla Shand, and after marrying Andrew Parker Bowles, she changed her name to Camilla Parker Bowles. She was then given the title of Duchess of Cornwall after marrying Prince Charles in 2005. She was not given the title of Princess of Wales out of respect for Princess Diana, who died in 1997.

According to a statement released by Buckingham Palace in 2005 announcing the couple’s engagement, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall would be recognized as “Princess consort” — not “Queen” — when Prince Charles takes the throne.

Clarence House announced the establishment of this new title before the couple married in a civil wedding at Windsor Guildhall.

“It is intended that Mrs. Parker Bowles should use the title HRH The Princess Consort when The Prince of Wales accedes to The Throne,” the statement said. Slate characterized “princess consort” as a term designed to avert a public relations nightmare.

“It’s a new title created just for Camilla, because crowning her as queen would create P.R. problems for the royals ,” writer Daniel Engber wrote.

“A marriage between divorcees like Charles and Camilla remains taboo for some members of the Church of England, and Camilla is already unpopular for breaking up the prince’s marriage to Diana.”

Prince Charles hasn’t ruled out giving his wife the title of Queen. In 2010, Brian Williams asked Prince Charles whether Camilla would become “Queen of England” if and when he became king. Charles said, “Well, we’ll see won’t we? That could be.”

According to Town & Country, Camilla’s possible future title was discussed on the “FAQ” section of the official website for the Prince of Wales and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall at one time.

Clarence House quietly removed this question and answer from the FAQs a few years ago, sparking speculation that the Duchess of Cornwall would take the title of Queen. However, a few other questions were also reportedly removed, and a spokesperson for the Palace told the Telegraph, “Our Frequently Asked Questions are updated regularly. This is one question that Clarence House has not been asked by the public for some time, which is why it no longer features.”

While Camilla’s popularity has grown in recent years, the Sunday Times reports that “two thirds of Britons did not think she should be queen, and only 19 percent thought she was fit for the role” as of August 2017.

Following Prince Philip’s death on April 9, there has been discussion regarding Camilla’s possible title. Prince Philip’s death has no effect on the royal line of succession, which remains the same: following the Queen, Prince Charles, and then Prince William.
