Rumer Willis started the new year off on a high note. On Thursday, January 31, the actress celebrated four years of sobriety.
Willis, 32, shared a photo of herself holding up four fingers on Instagram on Friday, writing in the caption that she was thankful to have remained on her sober quest despite the obstacles of 2020.
“So grateful for choosing myself above any need to distract or numb out. Especially this past year when so much has come up for not just myself but the world,” she wrote, in part.
“I feel immense gratitude that even when I have no escape from the feelings that come up no matter hard [sic] or painful they may be, I try my best to live through them and come out the other side.”
Like many others, she said that 2020 has been a very difficult year. She acknowledged, though, her determination to see her through to the other side.
“This year has brought up so many challenges,” the Sorority Row star wrote, “but I know that because I choose to rise to the challenge each and every time I am loving myself and showing myself that I am capable of getting through anything.”

Rumer sent out a letter to “everyone who is struggling,” emphasizing that recovery “is not a one-size-fits-all process.”
“For anyone and everyone who is struggling or has a desire to get sober know that it is not a one size fits all process but it’s one day at a time,” Willis wrote. “I don’t have all the answers, I know what has worked for me but always here to lend support or just listen.”
Gwyneth Paltrow and Peta Murgatroyd were among the celebrities who congratulated the Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood actress on her achievement.
“Amazing, Rumer,” said the Goop founder.
Willis has been candid about her sobriety struggle over the last few years. She announced her six-month sobriety in an Instagram post from July 2017.
“I will be the first one to say I’m not perfect and I mess up sometimes and every once in a while I get it right but I wanted to share this because I am really proud of myself,” she wrote at the time. “Yesterday I celebrated 6 Months of Sobriety. It’s not something I planned on but after the long journey of getting here I can honestly say I have never been more proud of myself in my entire life. Thank you all for the love and support and remember to be gentle with yourself.”
The message was the first time the eldest daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore discussed her fight publicly. Tallulah Willis, a sister who spent 45 days in a rehab inpatient program in 2014 for substance misuse and an eating issue, has also spoken up about her struggles.
Tallulah Willis, Rumer’s younger sister, who has also talked openly about her own sobriety, paid homage to her sibling in an Instagram post on Friday, Jan. 1.
She wrote to her sister, “Watching you powerfully and elegantly metamorphosis this past year is remarkable Ruuski. The most deserving soul I’ve ever met, you exude compassion, sensitivity and awareness for those in your close circle as well as the world at large. I love you!!!”
During her quarantine, Willis kept busy by co-hosting The Talk in November, when she revealed that her famous father, Bruce Willis, wants her to have a son.
When it comes to having children, she says, “Even my dad puts pressure on me. Over the quarantine he was like, ‘So I’d like for you to have a son because I need some male energy in this group.’ It’s a lot of women, obviously. He has five daughters and my mom and my stepmom. There’s just a lot of female energy. Even then, I’m like, OK, I want to make sure who I do that with.”
“But even still, if I have a son, I guarantee you guys, my dad would somehow try to come in and kidnap him, hijack the child, try and take him away,” Willis, who has been linked to Armie Hammer, said. “But it’s important to wait. I think it’s so important not to rush in and have it be about the lust or about, you know, that immediate connection, then building a real foundation.”
Willis is the latest celebrity to mark a significant milestone in their recovery. Anthony Hopkins celebrated 45 years of sobriety on Dec. 29, two days before his 83rd birthday.
Hopkins addressed supporters in a video shared on social media, saying, “45 years ago today, I had a wake-up call.”
“I was heading for disaster, drinking myself to death. I’m not preaching, but I got a message – a little thought that said ‘do you want to live or die?’ and I said ‘I want to live.’ And suddenly the relief came and life has been amazing.”
Since that day in 1975, the actor has had “off days” and “little bits of doubt” but he wanted his audience to leave his video feeling that they could persist as well.
