Ruby Rose, an Australian actress, has been dubbed the most ‘dangerous’ celebrity on the internet for people in the United States.
Rose was crowned by McAfee on Tuesday (Oct. 2), based on search results that potentially expose fans to fraudulent websites harboring malware.
Reality TV star Kristin Cavallari finished behind Rose at No. 2, followed by actress Marion Cotillard (No. 3), the original Wonder Woman Lynda Carter (No. 4), actress Rose Byrne (No. 5), Debra Messing (No. 6), reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian (No. 7), actress Amber Heard (No. 8), morning TV show host Kelly Ripa (No. 9), and actor Brad William Henke as No 10.
In a statement, Gary Davis, McAfee’s chief consumer security evangelist, warned that hackers take advantage of people’s fascination for celebrities to feed them to dangerous websites in the hopes that they will click on them.
“In our hyper-connected world, it’s important for consumers to think before they click to be sure that they are landing on safe digital content and protecting themselves from cyber security threats that may be used to infect their devices or steal their identity,” writes Gary Davis. “So whether you’re looking up what Ruby did on the latest Orange is the New Black episode, or what Kristin Cavallari wore the latest awards show, make sure you’re searching the internet safely.”
In addition to being cautious about what you click, McAfee recommends that internet users maintain their devices and software up to date with updates and use parental control software to safeguard their children.
The business compiled the celebrity list using its own site ratings as well as Google, Bing, and Yahoo searches.
According to McAfee, last year’s most dangerous celebrity, singer Avril Lavigne, came in at No. 30 this year. The highest-ranking musician was Adele, who came in at No. 21, followed by Shakira, who came in at No. 27.
McAfee also produced a list of the most dangerous celebrities to search in the United Kingdom on Tuesday, with Kim Kardashian topping the list.
On the UK list, supermodel Naomi Campbell came in second, while Kim’s sister Kourtney Kardashian came in third.
