Actress Winona Ryder has revealed that she checked herself into a psychiatric ward following her split from fellow actor Johnny Depp.

Ryder and Depp met while working on the film Edward Scissorhands in 1990 and were engaged the following year.

They lived together for several years before breaking up in 1993.

Depp was so enamoured with Ryder that he had the phrase Winona Forever tattooed on his arm.

However, Ryder said that she wasnt getting what she needed from the relationship and had to end things.

I needed to try to do something to heal the pain, she told The New York Times.

Ryder added that she was struggling with depression and anxiety at the time and felt overwhelmed by the pressures of Hollywood.

I was overworked and I think in a way, the break-up of my relationship just kind of pushed me over the edge, she said.

Depp has also spoken about the intensity of his relationship with Ryder.

He has said that he fell in love with her the moment he saw her and that their first encounter was like a scene from the musical West Side Story.

It was a classic glance, he said.

Like the zoom lenses in West Side Story, and everything else gets foggy.

Speaking to The Daily Mail in 2012, Depp called Ryder his first love and said that he would always have feelings for her.

Shes a great person, he said.

You fall in love with who you fall in love with. You cant choose.

Ryders hospitalisation took place in 1993, a year after her split from Depp.

She told The New York Times that she checked herself in for help with depression and exhaustion.

The actress added that she found the experience helpful and that she still sees a therapist today.

Since their breakup, both Ryder and Depp have had high-profile relationships with other people.

Depp has been married and divorced twice, to Lori Anne Allison and Amber Heard, and has also dated Kate Moss and Vanessa Paradis.

Ryder has also dated several high-profile men, including Matt Damon and Soul Asylum singer Dave Pirner.

Ryder is currently promoting the fourth season of the Netflix series Stranger Things, in which she plays Joyce Byers.

She has also recently appeared in the HBO series The Plot Against America and the film The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.

Depp has continued to work steadily in film, although he has faced personal and legal troubles in recent years.
