It’s been 14 years since Ashlee Simpson was caught lip-synching on Saturday Night Live, but she and the rest of the world haven’t forgotten about it.

The 33-year-old singer discusses the event in a new sneak peek clip from the premiere of her and husband Evan Ross’ upcoming reality series, ASHLEE + EVAN.

She became the first (and currently only) musician to walk out of a Saturday Night Live performance, revealing the fact that she had not (gasp) been singing live.

This happened after the vocals of her popular single “Pieces of Me” played before she had even brought the microphone to her mouth in 2004.

Simpson broke into a strange dance before exiting the stage in the startled silence that followed, as the band gradually ceased playing music.

“I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn’t know what to do so I thought I’d do a hoedown,” she said later, just as the credits rolled.

“S**t happened, and it was like, boom,” she recalls. “And the world hated me for this SNL moment I had.”

The aftermath was “humbling,” says the mother of two.

“For me, it the was the most humbling experience of my life,” she said. “The whole world thinks everything that you just put your heart and soul into writing is a joke — and that sucked.”

Simpson-Ross continued to compose music despite the setback. The singer continued to record after marrying Evan Ross in 2014, producing two additional albums. However, the stench of SNL had a long-term impact on her career.

“For me I went back in, I made a second record, it was number one,” Ashlee concludes. “And I made a third record and I toured all the amphitheaters… and I don’t even think the world knows that I got to that place, ” she says.

Now Ashlee and Evan are back in the studio, working on new songs that will be broadcast on the show.

Jessica Simpson, Ashlee’s elder sister, spoke with ET in July about the upcoming series. “She did a reality show [before], so I was shocked that she said yes to it, because it’s like you’re mic-ed for everything,” Jessica said at the time.

ASHLEE+EVAN follows her and Ross as they work on their new duets album and deal with life at home with their son Bronx Mowgli Wentz, 912 (whom Simpson-Ross shares with ex Pete Wentz) and daughter Jagger Snow, 3.
