According to reports, Ryan Gosling was approached by Backstreet Boys to join the group in the 1990s, but he declined.

Backstreet Boy A.J. McLean offered Gosling a place in the group while the two resided in the same Orlando apartment complex when the boyband was originally forming, Gosling revealed recently in an interview. The Canadian actor rejected, claiming that their chance of success “was never going to happen.”

“When I was doing the ‘Mickey Mouse Club,’ we were living in the same place. He was saying how big they were going to be,” Gosling stated to Celebuzz. “And he had a poster of them in his house … We were like, it’s never going to happen.”

‘”Didn’t they already do that with New Kids [On the Block]? You’re a little late,” Gosling said at the time. “Cut to… I was wrong.”

Of course, he was completely incorrect, and he claims he tried to contact McLean following the Backstreet Boys’ success, but never received a response.

In an interview with TMZ, McLean addressed the actor, saying, “Ryan, I am so sorry that I didn’t call you back. If we ever want a sixth Backstreet Boy member I’m gonna call you. You can sing,” he added. “He can sing his ass off. He’s not only a great actor and a handsome man.”

In 2009, Gosling formed the band Dead Man’s Bones with his friend Zach Shields.

Gosling claimed in a recent interview to promote his new film Gangster Squad that the Backstreet Boys were too much of a “New Kids rip-off” to be successful.

He’s also mentioned in the past how he and his sister Mandi used to perform at local talent events and weddings.

‘We would sing When a Man Loves a Woman to the bride,’ Gosling told Interview magazine.

‘We’d do it right before the garter ceremony. While the bride was sitting on the chair, I would get down on my knees and sing the song, and then my sister would sing another song, and then together we would sing Old Time Rock & Roll.

‘Then sometimes if we were really killing it, I’d sing Runaround Sue.’

Without Ryan Gosling, the Backstreet Boys went on to sell millions of records and have smash singles including ‘I Want It That Way,’ ‘As Long As You Love Me,’ and ‘Quit Playing Games (With My Heart).’ Kevin Richardson, an original member of the band, left to pursue other interests as the band reassembled in 2004.
