Coronji Calhoun Sr, best remembered for his role as Halle Berry’s son Tyrell Musgrove in the 2001 film Monster’s Ball, has died at the age of 30.

Calhoun died of congestive heart failure, according to reports.

Halle Berry’s performance in the 2001 film Monster’s Ball remains one of her most unforgettable roles, especially given it was the one that resulted in her Oscar triumph.

Prior to the Oscars, Berry discussed how tough it was to play an abusive character in the film, toward Calhoun, who played her artistically bright but overweight son.

Coronji Calhoun Sr. passed away on October 13 after being well-known for his part at 10 in the film, which also starred Billy Bob Thornton, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Peter Boyle, and the late Heath Ledger. The New York Post broke the news.

The news broke on Instagram after several of Calhoun Sr’s fans paid their respects to the actor, with Calhoun’s mother, Theresa C Bailey, confirming his death on October 13th.

Trending:

His mother, Theresa Bailey, announced his death via a GoFundMe page, stating that her son died on October 13. She’s seeking funds to assist with his burial expenses.

Berry and Monster’s Ball producer Lee Daniels appear to have donated to the GoFundMe campaign, each contributing £3,394.

According to a statement from Calhoun’s mother, Theresa Bailey, her son “did not have any life insurance policy on him,” and she wants to “give Coronji a sacred celebration of life.” She later amended the message to say that the financial load has been lifted owing to donations from people like Daniels and Berry.

Bailey wrote; “We are blown away by the outpouring of love the community and Coronji’s adopted family has shown during our process of grief. As we close this chapter, we ask that in your remembrance of him, you remember to love your neighbor as yourself, because that is what Coronji did for his entire community.”

It was Calhoun’s sole acting credit. According to SF Gate, he was cast in the film when he was 10 years old after attending an open casting call in Louisiana.

Letitcia Musgrove (Berry) is the major character in the film, and she falls in love with the prison officer (Billy Bob Thornton) who flicked the switch to execute her convict husband (Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs) on death row.

Berry stated in a 2001 interview, “It was a lot harder than even the love scene because [Coronji] was really 10 [years old] and obese.

“I worried that I would somehow damage him emotionally, not just in doing the scene, but down the road. So I talked to him a lot and hugged and kissed him a lot. He said, ‘You don’t have to worry about what you say; it can’t be as bad as how they treat me at school.’

“But I hear now he’s the most popular kid in his school. So I guess [the movie] helped.”

Halle Berry is preparing to make her directorial debut with Bruised, which will be released on Netflix on November 17 and stars Halle Berry as a disgraced MMA champion who returns to the ring after her son suddenly returns. Moonfall, a film starring the actress, is slated to be released in early 2022.

At the time of publishing, a little more than $10,400 had been contributed to assist the family’s unexpected tragedy.

We don’t know much about Coronji Calhoun Sr’s life after Monster’s Ball because he has kept out of the spotlight, but his premature death will come as a shock to many. He was a remarkable person, according to his adoptive mother, who gave back to his community and family. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Coronji Calhoun Sr’s family, friends, and fans.
