Thor: Love and Thunder, the next chapter in Marvel Studios’ Thor trilogy, will be the first in the series sans Loki, Odinson’s adopted brother. In the present timeline, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki was slain after the events of Avengers: Infinity War, but a variation from another timeline still survives outside the laws of time and space, working alongside the TVA in his own Disney+ TV series. But, as far as Thor is aware, Loki is no longer alive, and the Asgardian has opted to pay a permanent tribute to his fallen brother.

An enormous tattoo of Loki can be seen around the two-minute mark of the teaser, just after Russell Crowe’s Zeus blows Thor’s garments off. When you zoom in on the footage, you can clearly see Loki’s horned cap. While the day when Thor’s tattoo was made is unknown, some fans suggest that it may be a tribute because the God of Thunder believes Loki is dead after Thanos killed him in Avengers: Infinity War.

Thor not only has a large tattoo of Loki’s distinctive horned helmet covering the majority of his back, but fans have also noticed that it appears that “RIP LOKI” is inked above the horns, emphasizing the point. Thor’s Loki tattoo is a touching reminder of how much Loki meant to him, and it alludes to Thor’s grief over his brother’s death in Infinity War and Endgame.

Thor and Loki have long had a tense relationship, but by the end of Thor: Ragnarok, they appeared to have put many of their differences aside. Thanos, who was on the lookout for the Space Stone, attacked their ship shortly after they departed Asgard. Loki attempted to fool Thanos with his final deed, but the Mad Titan saw right through him and cruelly slaughtered Loki in front of Thor. While Thor is unaware of Loki’s variant who is working with the TVA, that version of Loki has seen a recap of his whole existence and knows exactly how the narrative concluded with his 616 counterpart and Thor.

Thor: Love and Thunder appears to cover so much ground that it’s difficult to think it’ll all fit into one feature. Following in the footsteps of Waititi’s tone shift for Chris Hemsworth in Thor: Ragnarok, this film appears to follow similar beats, aiming to keep things light at least at first. Jane Foster, played by Natalie Portman, will make a comeback as a version of Mighty Thor. Then there’s Bale’s Gorr the God Butcher, who has a Voldemort-like appearance and is out to kill all of the Gods. Thor is next on the list.

The Guardians of the Galaxy are expected to make an appearance in the MCU, and they will ostensibly assist Odinson on his path to inner peace.

It’ll be interesting to see if Chris Hemsworth and the rest of the cast reflect on the events of the past, such as how he lost Loki. This film appears to be of the soul-searching sort, with Thor’s character remaining “lost” in many of the ways we saw him in End Game, albeit he appears to be more driven to do something about it this time around. When Thor: Love and Thunder hits theaters on July 8th, we’ll get our first look at him, back tattoo and all.
