During a performance of her 2010 song “Whip My Hair,” Willow Smith shaved her head.

In honor of her new album Lately I Feel Everything, the “Transparent Soul” singer shared a special concert on Facebook on July 16 with Travis Barker and Avril Lavigne. Willow sat down and a lady progressively shaved her hair until she had a buzz cut during the concert’s final moments, while playing her popular song “Whip My Hair.”

She was nine years old when the song was first released. “When I made ‘Whip My Hair,’ I didn’t really know that it was an important thing because I was just expressing my joy and I was just expressing myself,” she says in the video. Willow had been striving to become a grownup for years, but the charming, childish melody had been haunting her, so she pushed it aside. But she finally came to see it as a turning point in her life.

During a behind-the-scenes interview, Smith, the daughter of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, stated, “My favorite song in the set right now just because of how it feels to sing would probably have to be ‘Whip My Hair.”

“I am thinking about shaving my head during the ‘Whip My Hair’ performance,” she later said. “This is gonna be my third time in my life shaving my head. I’m always shaving my head at monumental times in my life when things are really changing and this is definitely one of those moments.”

Smith believes that even though her sound has changed with her new punk-rock group, the message has remained the same.

“Even though ‘Whip My Hair’ is so different from everything that you’ve done, it still has like a similar message,” one of her bandmates observes during a behind-the-scenes moment.

“Oh my God, it’s the same,” she responds. “Be yourself. The core idea of ‘Whip My Hair’ is the core idea of all my music. The genres just changes, but I’m saying the same thing every single time.”

“For so many years, I just kind of spiraled and didn’t really understand that, and wanted to push myself away from that, without having that understanding,” she continued. “I’m pushing away the very thing that is who I am.”

“I want to be promoting positivity. I want to be promoting expression, and I feel like ‘Whip My Hair’ was just a huge encouragement to people to just be themselves and to help others do the same.”

Willow Smith recently persuaded her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, to shave her head as well. “A gift is pure when it is given from the heart to the right person at the right time and at the right place, and when we expect nothing in return,” she said in the caption of a photo of her mother and daughter displaying the outcome.

The buzz cut is also a new beginning for Jada, who has suffered with hair loss in recent years. She captioned her Instagram photo showcasing the new ‘do, “It was time to let go. BUT … my 50s are bout to be divinely lit with this shed.”

During a candid chat on Red Table Talk in 2018, Jada Pinkett Smith confessed she was suffering with significant hair loss. According to Allure, she added, “It’s not easy to talk about it, but I’m going to talk about it,” recalling a “terrifying” period in her life when her hair started falling out in the shower.

“It was one of those times in my life where I was literally shaking in fear. That’s why I cut my hair, and why I continue to cut it,” she continued, later adding, “Taking care of my hair has been a beautiful ritual, as is having the choice to have hair or not.”

Smith shaved her head for the first time in 2012 during the Whip My Hair tour, surprising her father.

Will Smith remarked at the time, “She was done with ‘Whip My Hair.’ She was done with performing, and as a protest, she shaved her head bald.”
