Mila Kunis and Ashton Kutcher conduct bath time for their children in a very unique way.

During their most recent appearance on the Armchair Expert podcast, the couple claimed that they only bathed their children as babies when they could “see the dirt on them.”

The topic came up when co-hosts Dax Shepard and Monica Padman were discussing how frequently they shower. Kunis, 37, and Kutcher, 43, agreed when Shepard, 46, stressed that Padman, 33, “should not be getting rid of the natural oil on your skin with a bar of soap every day” and instead wash with water.

“I can’t believe I am in the minority here of washing my whole body in the shower. Who taught you to not wash?” Padman inquired, and Kunis responded, “I didn’t have hot water growing up as a child, so I didn’t shower much anyway.”

“When I had [newborn] children, I also didn’t wash them every day,” Kunis said, according to BuzzFeed. “I wasn’t the parent that bathed my newborns—ever.” (She and Kutcher have two children together.)

“Here’s the thing,” Kutcher chimed in, “if you can see the dirt on them, clean them. Otherwise, there’s no point.” He later posted a video on Instagram poking fun at the whole bathing debacle, exclaiming to Kunis, “You’re putting water on the children? Are you trying to melt them?”

The star couple’s laissez faire bathing practice is similar to that recommended by health professionals for newborns. The Mayo Clinic recommends bathing newborns three times a week until they are mobile.

According to the Mayo Clinic, bathing kids too frequently with soap “can dry out his or her skin,”

Kelly M. Cordoro, M.D., a dermatology and pediatrics professor, recently talked with The New York Times on this topic. “Overbathing an infant may dry out the skin, making it itchy and rashy,” she said, per BuzzFeed. “It can be very irritating and unnecessary, as it can wash away the top layer of protective skin cells, natural oils, and normal healthy bacteria, leaving the skin dry, itchy and vulnerable to irritation and possibly skin infections.”

According to the American Dermatology Association, children aged 6 to 11 should bathe at least once or twice a week, with regular baths commencing at puberty.

In terms of their own showering routines, Kunis and Kutcher both stated on the Armchair Expert podcast that they do not use soap on their full bodies every day.

“I wash my armpits and my crotch daily, and nothing else ever,” Kutcher said of his soap usage. “I got a bar of Lever 2000 that delivers every time. Nothing else.”

However, the couple eventually agreed that they should both wash their faces; Kutcher after a workout “to get all the salts out,” and Kunis twice daily.

Shepard and his wife, Kristen Bell, subsequently told TODAY that they use a “foot smell test” to choose when to bathe their daughters. Several celebrities have stepped in to explain their habits, including Jake Gyllenhaal, who believes bathing is “less necessary” and Dwayne Johnson, who showers three times each day.
