Idris Elba says he won’t be the next James Bond

On Wednesday, British actor Idris Elba shocked James Bond fans with a single two-letter phrase.

The Luther star has been heavily rumored to take over as 007 following the next movie of the British espionage series. Idris, on the other hand, seems to have effectively put an end to all hopes and rumors.

Rumors started to spread two weeks ago that James Bond producers were considering Elba for the part of 007. Elba himself poked fun at the claims a few days later with a few cryptic tweets regarding portraying Bond. This sparked a frenzy of curiosity, and even anger, on the internet, that Elba might be considered. And, to be clear, there’s no reason why Elba can’t play Bond. But the issue is that he’s confirmed once again that he’s not the future James Bond star.

Idris Elba, 45, was stopped for a red carpet interview with Good Morning Britain at the premiere of his new film Yardie on Monday night. In an effort to get a response from the actor, the GMB reporter posed the standard Bond question: “Do you like it shaken or stirred?”

According to the UK’s Express, he replied, “Stir-fried, actually.”

However, when asked whether he was looking at the next 007, Idris answered, ‘No.’

For years, Elba’s name has been bandied about as a potential Bond, notably in 2014, when an email leaked from Sony Pictures senior executive Amy Pascal revealed her belief that “Idris should be the next Bond.”

Elba said in a Reddit AMA at the time of the leak that he would “absolutely” accept the job if it was given to him.

Although he quickly denied the claims, Idris has had a lot of fun stoking the idea in recent weeks. On Sunday, the British actor performed a DJ performance at London’s Elrow, beginning with the famous Bond theme tune. Cheeky.

Earlier this month, he fueled rumors that he could become the first black Bond with a mysterious Twitter post – a photo with the words “my name’s Elba, Idris Elba,” mimicking the spy’s famous catchphrase.

Elba then addressed the allegations, saying, “Don’t believe the HYPE.”

Yesterday, the official James Bond Twitter account announced Danny Boyle’s resignation as director, saying, “Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli and Daniel Craig today announced that due to creative differences Danny Boyle has decided to no longer direct Bond 25.”

The actor may be implying that he will not play the part, but he could also be implying that he hasn’t signed anything yet, or that Craig is still the current and future Bond, since he has one film left in him. Or maybe he simply wanted to practice being a good super-spy and believes in keeping one’s major intentions hidden.

Idris indicated in a recent interview with the New York Times that people are only tipping him for the Bond role because he is black.

‘I think it’s more about, ‘We just want to have a black guy play James Bond’, rather than, “Idris Elba, the actor, play James Bond”. That’s the part I’m like, ‘Ugh, come on’. It could be a woman — could be a black woman, could be a white woman — do something different with it, you know?’ he explained.

While Elba will not be playing Bond, fans will be able to watch him as a famous British police enforcement figure. Later this year, the actor will return for the fifth season of Luther, the BBC series for which he has received four Emmy nods.

It’s unclear if Boyle’s abrupt departure will have an impact on the film’s release schedule.

There is still time for Bond producers to select a new 007. Even if they do locate their individual, it won’t be revealed until after Craig’s last film.
