Jada Pinkett Smith has spoken up about her family’s reaction to her son Jaden’s decision to reject the gender difference in fashion.

In the current episode of Red Table Talk, the 46-year-old actress discusses how she and her husband Will Smith discussed Jaden’s irreverent fashion choices in wearing a skirt with her two children, Jaden, 19, and Willow, 17, and mother Adrienne Banfield Norris, 64.

The 19-year-old frequently wears skirts to events, and he was named one of Louis Vuitton’s womenswear faces in 2016.

Despite his success, Jaden’s father did not instantly appreciate his fashion choices.

‘Being a black young man’ and ‘and the son of like an über masculine hip-hop star’ like her husband of 20 years, who she said was originally uncomfortable about his son’s taste in couture,’ the Collateral actor praised her son’s boldness for the daring aesthetic decisions.

When Jaden Smith began experimenting with fashion as a teen, Jada Pinkett Smith stated that her husband ‘had his feelings’ about him wearing skirts and dresses.

Pinkett Smith said, “He has his feelings on that for sure. I remember Will calling me and being like, ‘Have you talked about this Jaden and him wearing a skirt?’ And I said, ‘Yeah I have. He’s pretty happy about it.’ ”

Pinkett Smith revealed that her son “talked about wanting to wear skirts to give kids the freedom, to give other people the freedom to think out of the box for themselves and not feel like in doing that that they would be bullied or be attacked in some way.”

The Karate Kid star laughed: ‘I wore the skirts to I could look fly. That’s why I wore the skirts, so everyone would say, “He’s an innovator. His head’s in a different place.”‘

In a previous interview, the 19-year-old shared similar comments, adding that he would always aim to be different in order to set an example and be recognized as being ahead of his time.

“The world is going to keep bashing me for whatever I do, and I’m going to keep not caring. I’m going to keep doing the same things — I’m going to keep doing more things,” he said.

‘I’m going to take most of the blows for my fellow MSFTS. So, you know, in five years when a kid goes to school wearing a skirt, he won’t get beat up and kids won’t get mad at him. It just doesn’t matter. I’m taking the brunt of it so that later on, my kids and the next generations of kids will all think that certain things are normal that weren’t expected before my time.’

Pinkett Smith also talked on the show about reconciling her children’s childhoods with their ambitious career objectives, revealing that the topic caused her and her husband a lot of friction. “I remember being on set with Will and it was such a struggle between he and I in regards to Jaden,” she recalled of Jaden’s breakout role in The Karate Kid when he was just 12 years old.

“I understand why men take their sons away for like whatever kind of warrior training because it is completely, utterly unfair and unnatural for a woman to have to sit and watch anything like that for her son,” she continued, alluding to Jaden’s hard training for the role.

“Will and I were in constant conflict, to the point where we were warring over Jaden,” she admitted.

Despite whatever disagreements she may have had with Will about the trajectory of their careers, Jada assured her son and daughter that she was ‘proud’ of their work and successes.

‘Even in those battles that we’ve had over what’s too much, what’s too little, trying to find the balance in regards to parenting, I’ll tell you one thing about the two of y’all: Y’all know how to work, you work hard, and you do it well,’ she said.
