One of the more uncomfortable moments of the day was Melania Trump’s move to offer Michelle Obama a surprise present during the inauguration.

The former first lady, 54, opens up about the gift exchange to presenter Ellen DeGeneres in her first TV interview since leaving the White House, finally disclosing what was inside the Tiffany & Co. box.

“When the transfer was happening, when Donald Trump and his wife were moving into the White House, there was a gift exchange,” the now 60-year-old DeGeneres tells viewers in a Thursday program.

Obama nods and says, “The Tiffany’s box.”

Ms Obama had no idea what to do with the mysterious object, as she awkwardly received it and glanced around for a spot to put it while flashing a fast look at the camera.

In footage of their meeting, the First Lady can be heard remarking, “You brought a gift!”

“Well, there’s all this protocol,” Obama said to Ellen DeGeneres on “Ellen.”

“I mean, this is like a state visit, so they tell you that you’re going to do this, they’re going to stand here. Never before do you get this gift, so I’m sort of like OK. … What am I supposed to do with this gift?” Obama said.

She turned to her left, toward one of the Marines, holding the box in her hands and scanning the area for a suitable location to place the present. The Marine remained unmoved. It couldn’t be placed on the ground. She finally appeared to give up trying, resigned to the fact that it would be captured in an official image commemorating the handover of power.

“Everyone cleared out and no one would come and take the box,” she said, as the crowd chuckled.

“And I’m thinking, ‘Do we take the picture with (it)?’ ”

“And then my husband saved the day – see he grabbed the box and took it back inside. But everybody cleared out. No staff, no one. I was like what do you do with the box?” she adds.

It was never seen again in public.

The clip was extensively shared on social media at the time, with viewers describing it as “so awkward” and “cringeworthy.”

And what was inside the package that caused such a ruckus? “It was a lovely frame,” Obama said to DeGeneres.

Michelle Obama and Jennifer Aniston will join Ellen DeGeneres for a two-day celebration of her 60th birthday.

“I knew my 60th birthday show was gonna be fun, but I didn’t know it’d be this fun,” the host tweeted Tuesday.
