Emma Watson ‘would love’ to Do a ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Sequel

With Disney gradually making its way through each of its cartoon classics, all of which are destined for live-action adaptation, it’s unclear what the next step will be once it’s exhausted its options.

While Disney’s live-action remakes of The Jungle Book and Cinderella were both economic and critical successes, this March’s Beauty and the Beast was the real test. Those other films were beloved, but Beauty and the Beast was released only 25 years ago, which means that the primary demographic of people who go to the cinema or take their children are precisely the ideal age to have highly strong views about the animated original. Fortunately, Disney and director Bill Condon hit the perfect tone, earning $1.1 billion (and counting), and the tremendous popularity of the musical has prompted Disney to fast-track other millennial-favorite remakes such as Aladdin, Mulan, and The Lion King.

Beauty and the Beast was one of the season’s most anticipated films. And, with Emma Watson and Dan Stevens at the helm, the Disney classic was brought to life in a way that did not disappoint — after all, the picture shattered box office records, grossing more than $1 billion worldwide. So it’s definitely not a stretch to conclude that viewers (and perhaps producers) would welcome more — and now Emma has chimed in.

Emma Watson gave Beauty and the Beast fans something to cheer about at the premiere of her new film, The Circle, which also stars Tom Hanks.

She told Access Hollywood that she is completely on board if Disney pursues a sequel.

“I would love to do a sequel,” the actress and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador stated enthusiastically.

“I always thought that Belle would become a teacher and she would run a library in the castle and open it up to the village. This was where I was going.”

Shortly after the film’s premiere, it was revealed that Disney was exploring a potential spinoff or prequel to the film, as part of an effort to build on the Beauty brand.

Of course, the new live-action feature would pick up where the original Disney film left off. As a result, it would be up to the authors to construct an epilogue for all of our favorite characters that goes beyond the bounds of the original storyline. However, it appears that authors should absolutely engage Emma in the screenplay writing process, since she stated in the interview that she has a few ideas for Belle.

Given the film’s box office success, which Watson described as “crazy,” a sequel is inevitable.

“I mean I hoped that the movie would do well but this has been insane,” she said, “completely beyond all of my wildest dreams and expectations. I’m just so grateful and it’s been unbelievable.”

Though Belle and Beast’s stories are nicely wound up by the end of the film, not to mention the fact that the picture would have to be re-titled Beauty and the (Prince Formerly Known as) Beast, it wouldn’t be strange if Disney was eager to profit off the film’s massive popularity.

When Watson agreed to play Belle, she invested a lot of herself to the part, ensuring that the character had agency and depth. This sequel proposal undoubtedly extends on Belle’s role as an intellectual and loving heroine, but finding the perfect enemy or plot twist to add drama may be difficult.

Beauty and the Beast’s run has broken worldwide records, and it has just become the highest-grossing musical of all time in the United Kingdom.

Given that the pricey Alice Through the Looking Glass was a major disappointment, Disney may be leery of attempting a direct sequel anytime soon. The first Alice in Wonderland grossed almost $1 billion, while the sequel earned just $299 million on a $170 million budget. That is a significant fall, and while time lag may have played a role (it was released six years after the first film), it was still a costly flop.

Furthermore, the Mouse House is under no obligation to create a Beauty and the Beast sequel, spinoff, or prequel. They’re doing OK as is, and with a slew of new high-profile remakes on the way, it might not be worth risking ruining a good thing. One would assume that they would only move ahead if the right concept came up, whether it’s Watson’s sequel or some type of prequel or offshoot idea, as previously rumored.

Beauty and the Beast is out in theaters.
