Charlize Theron admitted to having a difficult relationship with Tobey Maguire during the filming of Cider House Rules in 1999.

The revelation was made by the 40-year-old actress during an interview with James Franco that was published in V Magazine.

Theron, 40, told V Magazine’s Hollywood Issue cover story, “Tobey and I had a bit of a rough time. I mean, we’re good now. It was a difficult movie. Every day is completely different for a completely different reason. Whether it’s the weather, or the writing isn’t there, or you don’t get along with your castmate, you have to be able to go to something else that’s just as powerful. Does it make it as enjoyable? Probably not. I mean, there were just a couple of days that Tobey and I had a rough time.”

“The rest of the movie, we actually had a really good time.”

Theron goes on to claim that she and Maguire, who portrayed her love interest in the 1999 Lasse Hallström film, have since patched things up, but the traumatic experience has given her a new perspective on how to approach future roles. “It teaches you different things. It taught me that I could fall in love with somebody in my head while looking at someone else.”

Franco attempted to get Charlize to reveal who she was imagining in her thoughts, but she refused.

‘That I can’t share with you. I had to. We had some really intimate moments. Tobey and I didn’t feel that way about each other, so I had to figure something else out,’ she explained.

One of Theron’s first significant acting roles in Hollywood was in the period film Candy Kendall, opposite Tobey Maguire’s Homer Wells. The South African native, who was 22 at the time of filming, went on to win the Best Actress Oscar five years later for her role as a serial murderer in Monster. Maguire, like Theron, was on the verge of superstardom at the time, and he got the starring role in Spider-Man from 2002 to 2007.

Franco also inquires about Theron’s early career as a model and actor, with the Oscar winner recalling her audition for John Herzfeld’s 1996 crime picture 2 Days in the Valley. Her character was shot in the stomach in the scene she read for, which Theron brought to life with a bottle of ketchup. “I poured [it] on my stomach, then told the receptionist outside, ‘Look, it’s going to get a little loud,’” she said. “I barged through the door, getting ketchup on all the doors and the furniture… I think they were a little more concerned about my own sanity. Eventually they gave me the role. [Director John Herzfeld] said, ‘I knew you’d be up for anything.’”

Theron also talked about the sexism she’s encountered in Hollywood over the previous few decades. “It’s brutal when you think of the truth of what we face in society, what it means for a woman versus what it means for a man,” the Huntsman: Winter’s War actress reflected to V. “What we, especially women, consider to be our strengths and to be our weaknesses. That aging is a weakness that we think of it that way. Yet, it’s when we’re at our wisest. We’ve experienced everything and we should be considering ourselves the richest.”

She goes on to say that it’s not only a problem for female celebs; it’s a problem for all women.

“We talk about women in Hollywood as if it’s different for women who are bankers in the Midwest. It really isn’t,” she says. “I have friends who are not in this industry — women, beautiful women. I see the pressures that they face. I see how they feel when they get older. It’s everywhere.”

Theron, who most recently starred in the Oscar-winning Mad Max: Fury Road, will next be seen in the Cannes-bound thriller The Last Face, directed by her former lover Sean Penn, as well as The Huntsman: Winter’s War, which will be released on April 22.
