Vanessa Hudgens has apologized for an “insensitive” Instagram post in which she appeared to downplay the severity of the coronavirus outbreak.

Vanessa went live on Instagram on Monday, March 16, and said some things about the coronavirus that a lot of people didn’t like.

Hudgens said, “Yeah, til July sounds like a bunch of bulls–, I’m sorry. It’s a virus, I get it. I respect it.”

“But at the same time, like, even if everybody gets it — like, yeah, people are gonna die. Which is terrible. But, like, inevitable? I don’t know, maybe I shouldn’t be doing this right now,” she said with a laugh.

It didn’t take long for this brief video to gain traction on the internet. Critics have slammed the singer-actor for her “heartless” and “irresponsible” statements, but she claims they were taken out of context.

“So, yesterday I did an Instagram Live, and I realized today that some of my comments are being taken out of context,” she said on Instagram. “It’s a crazy time. It’s a crazy, crazy time, and I am at home and in lockdown. And that’s what I hope you guys are doing too, in full quarantine and staying safe and sane. I don’t take this situation lightly by any means. I am home, so stay inside y’all.”

She then issued a comprehensive apology.

“I realise my words were insensitive and not at all appropriate for the situation our country and the world are in right now,” she admitted.

“This has been a huge wake up call to the significance my words have, now more than ever. I’m sending safe wishes to everyone to stay safe and healthy during this crazy time.”

Hudgens is one of several celebrities who have recommended their followers use social distance and self-isolation as coronavirus prevention measures. Taylor Swift shared the following message on Instagram: “Guys, I follow you online and I love you guys so much and need to express my concern that things aren’t being taken seriously enough right now. I’m seeing lots of get-togethers and hangs and parties still happening. This is the time to cancel plans, actually truly isolate as much as you can, and don’t assume that because you don’t feel sick that you aren’t possibly passing something on to someone elderly or vulnerable to this. It’s a really scary time. But we need to make social sacrifices right now.”

Coronavirus has now affected all 50 states of the United States, resulting in 108 fatalities and over 6,300 confirmed cases.

There are over 200,000 verified cases worldwide, with roughly 8,000 fatalities.
