Daniel Craig has made headlines regarding who should and shouldn’t play the next Bond, as he explained why he doesn’t believe the next Bond should be played by a woman.

While the teaser suggests that Lashana Lynch’s 00 agent Nomi will likely take Bond’s position, the man of the moment is not one for doing things just for the sake of doing them.

Craig has finally weighed in on the debate whether the character should be played by a woman, he told Radio Times, “The answer to that is very simple. There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color. Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

Although No Time to Die (due out Oct. 8) will still center around Bond and his newest exhilarating adventure, the film has an unprecedented amount of female players, both on and off screen.

The long-running series is now produced by Barbara Broccoli. She’s been asked these kinds of questions for a long time. Last year, when the subject came up in a Variety roundtable, the producer made it clear that the character was male.

“He can be of any color, but he is male,” Broccoli stated. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

Broccoli also stated in an interview with The Guardian in 2018 that while Bond’s gender hasn’t changed, she feels there has been a shift in his position as a whole.

“Bond is male,” Broccoli stated. “He’s a male character. He was written as a male and I think he’ll probably stay as a male… And that’s fine. We don’t have to turn male characters into women. Let’s just create more female characters and make the story fit those female characters.”

“Look at the way the world has changed,” Broccoli said. “And I think Bond has come through and transformed with the times. I’ve tried to do my part, and I think particularly with the Daniel [Craig] films, they’ve become much more current in terms of the way women are viewed.”

Even then, some performers in the picture, including Lynch, appear to disagree with Craig. Lynch seemed to indicate that a woman might conceivably play the next Bond in an interview with the Guardian last week, despite the fact that she herself did not want the job.

“They’re actually giving the audience what they want to give the audience,” Lynch said of No Time to Die’s producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. “With Bond, it could be a man or woman. They could be white, black, Asian, mixed race. They could be young or old. At the end of the day, even if a two-year-old was playing Bond, everyone would flock to the cinema to see what this two-year-old’s gonna do, no?”

Actress Lashana Lynch joined the cast as an agent assigned the 007 code, while writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge contributed to the writing and, as Craig described it, “made her presence felt throughout the action-packed movie.”

Regé-Jean Page of Bridgerton was rumored to be the next James Bond, but he appeared to dispel those claims during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in January.
