Brian Cox Slams Johnny Depp as ‘overrated’ in New Book: ‘So Overblown’

Brian Cox is airing his grievances against a number of Hollywood celebrities, including Johnny Depp.

The 75-year-old Emmy winner, best known for his portrayal as despotic media magnate Logan Roy on HBO’s “Succession” stated in his biography “Putting the Rabbit in the Hat,” that he turned down a part in the “Pirates of the Caribbean” film series in the early 2000s. Governor Weatherby Swann, which was subsequently awarded to Jonathan Pryce, was offered to Cox by the casting team.

The actor does not appear to be concerned about offending his celebrity pals, and he stated that he will not be surprised if he does not ‘hear from some people again.’

According to The Big Issue, the actor said of the 58-year-old, ““Another thing with Pirates of the Caribbean is that it’s very much the ‘Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow’ show, and Depp, personable though I’m sure he is, is so overblown, so overrated.”

The 75-year-old then proceeded to rip the actor’s whole career apart.

He continued, “I mean, Edward Scissorhands. Let’s face it, if you come on with hands like that and pale, scarred-face make-up, you don’t have to do anything. And he didn’t. And subsequently, he’s done even less.”

Quentin Tarantino, the writer and director of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, was also chastised by Cox.

‘I find his work meretricious. It’s all surface. Plot mechanics in place of depth. Style where there should be substance. I walked out of Pulp Fiction. That said, if the phone rang, I’d do it.”,’ he said.

“Putting the Rabbit in the Hat” also includes tales of Cox’s interactions with A-list celebrities like Ed Norton, Steven Seagal, and others during the course of his almost 60-year career.

Johnny’s fans rushed to his defense and accused Brian of speaking out of term and sharing an ignorant opinion about something he knows nothing about, and in an interview with Yahoo!, Brian clarified what he meant by what he said:

What certain people accused me of was my lack of respect, and I really do not disrespect anybody involved in this profession because I know how difficult it is. Now, I may have reservations about their talent, but I certainly don’t disrespect them. And my reservations about Johnny Depp are minimal — absolutely minimal. You know, I do think he’s sometimes overblown, but I actually think he’s also done some considerable work. Some of his work has really been extraordinarily good.

Cox did have some good words for the late Alan Rickman, with whom he co-starred in the films Therese Raquin and Unforgivable Blackness, describing him as “one of the sweetest, kindest, nicest, and most incredibly smart men I’ve ever met.” He was a graphic designer before becoming an actor, and he brought that profession’s calculated, laser-like accuracy to his work.

Cox has learnt to own his past, “warts and all,” he added.

“In the book, I had to say, ‘Look I was not a good father, I was unfaithful,’ and it’s tough but that was part of what I was. At my age you have to just call a shovel a shovel.”
