Drew Barrymore, 45, discussed the background behind some of her best performances, including her famous but short-lived one in the 1996 horror movie, during an interview on First We Feast’s Hot Ones series on Thursday.

Scream was a major hit when it initially came out in theaters, and the franchise has since grossed over $600 million in its first four installments. While Drew Barrymore’s character Casey might have been at the center of it as Sidney, she and horror master Wes Craven startled moviegoers by murdering her off in the first 12 minutes of the film. At the time, Barrymore described her feelings about the decision.

“In the horror film genre, my biggest pet peeve was that I always knew the main character was always going to be slugging through at the end but was going to creak by and make it,” Barrymore told Sean Evans on Hot Ones. “What I wanted to do is to take that comfort zone away. I asked if I could be Casey Becker so that we would establish that rule does not apply in this film.”

Courteney Cox and David Arquette took supporting roles with Neve Campbell in the film’s starring role of Sidney Prescott.

Scream follows a group of high school students, including later series lead Campbell, who are as knowledgeable about horror films as we are. Even the killer is a horror movie fanatic, to the point that he uses it as a calling card (e.g., “What’s your favorite scary movie?”). For horror aficionados, the film functions as a horror film.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly in 2011, Barrymore discussed her decision to portray Casey in further depth, revealing that she was only on set for five days.

“I just read the script one night at my house and I just said, ‘Oh my God, there hasn’t been anything like this for so long,'” she explained.

“I loved that it actually got tongue-in-cheeky but it was still scary and it was this great game that sort of described genres and revived them at the same time and redefined them all in one script,” she said. “I went bananas.”

While Casey’s death remains one of horror’s most shocking plot twists, there are three key Scream characters who have survived all four films, two of whom have been confirmed for Scream 5. David Arquette and Courteney Cox have been confirmed to reprise their roles as Dewey Riley and Gale Weathers, respectively, in Scream 5.

David told Entertainment Tonight that he is looking forward to spending time on set with his wife Cox, whom he met 24 years ago while co-starring in the original Scream.

‘We co-parent,’ said David, who was married to Courtney from 1999 until 2013 and has a 16-year-old daughter with her. ‘So, we’re in touch quite a bit. It’s great.’

Recently, Arquette has been discussing his experience with the franchise, saying that Cox’s notorious bangs from Scream 3 were his fault. The actor also recently expressed his desire for Neve Campbell to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott in the franchise.
