Actors and their co-stars don’t always get along. Hugh Grant said in a new interview with People that Robert Downey Jr. wanted to kill him.
“[He] hated me. Hated me. We did a thing called Restoration and he took one look at me and wanted to kill me,” Grant told host Jess Cagle, who is also the editor-in-chief of People magazine.
When asked why Downey was enraged, Grant responded, “I don’t know. I was so hurt.”
Following the news of his remarks, the Iron Man star reached out to Hugh on Twitter, saying he ‘respects’ him and wants to ‘break bread’ with him.
‘A lot has happened over two decades! ‘ Robert wrote on Friday.
‘I respect how Mr. Grant has matured as an artist & voice against violations of privacy. Let’s break bread together soon #burythehatchet2018.’

Grant was more than prepared to make amends. “If you’re in London come by and break bread,” Grant told Downey Jr. “Won’t be easy as my 5-year-old bakes it, but you seem strong.”
Restoration was directed by Michael Hoffman, who previously directed the star-studded Soapdish with Robert Downey Jr. in 1991 and The Last Station in 2009.
The popularity of “Restoration,” which went on to win two Academy Awards, was unaffected by their dispute.
‘I just thought he was a d**k, that’s all. And I still do,’ Robert previously remarked of the Notting Hill star.
‘You know, and that could be something that has to do with me, or it could just be that not everyone in this industry is someone I’d care to hang out with.’
Hugh also revealed details about his former relationships with Drew Barrymore (“hate[d] me a bit”), Emma Thompson (“genius”), Andie MacDowell (“southern peach charmer”), and Robin Williams (“genius on another level”) in the revealing interview.
Grant described Meryl Streep, with whom he co-starred in the 2017 film Florence Foster Jenkins, as a “genius” who fights with her vision.
“She wears glasses all the time, but she refuses to wear contact lenses when she acts because she thinks that the camera can see them,” he told People. “So, the result is, if we’re doing a scene as close as you and I are now, to Meryl, I could have been Denzel Washington.”
And what about his Bridget Jones’s Diary co-star Renée Zellweger?
“Renee loves me, and I love Renee.”
