During his libel fight against the Sun, which accused him of being a “wife-beater,” Johnny Depp confessed to binge drinking, drugging, and trashing hotel rooms, but disputed claims by his former wife Amber Heard that he was aggressive towards her.

Depp is suing The Sun’s publisher, News Group Newspapers, and the paper’s executive editor, Dan Wootton, over an April 2018 piece alleging he violently abused ex-wife Amber Heard.

Depp described the tumultuous relationship with Heard during cross-examination by The Sun’s lawyer, Sasha Wass, at a period when he was trying to stop narcotics and alcohol but occasionally relapsed. He admitted to feeling like he was in a “constant tailspin,” but he denied becoming aggressive.

Heard was also in the courtroom, and she is scheduled to testify later in the case.

Depp’s lawyers stated Heard’s allegations of violence were “invented,” and he categorically denied ever being aggressive against her.

Depp allegedly screamed at Heard on his own island in the Bahamas in 2014 while attempting to break an addiction to the opiate Roxicodone, according to Wass. He denied physical aggression, but admitted that Heard’s assertion that he was “flipping” and “screaming” was perhaps true.

“I remember that I was in a great deal of pain and uncontrollable spasms and such. … So flipping could be a word that was correct,” he said. “I was not in good shape. It was the lowest point I believe I’ve ever been in in my life.”

Depp denied Heard’s accusation that he assaulted her for three days in March 2015 in Australia, where he was filming the fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” film.

“I vehemently deny it and will go as far as to say it’s pedestrian fiction,” he said.

According to the PA Media news agency, lawyers for News Group Newspapers (NGN) informed a high court judge that the firm’s portrayal of Depp is “entirely accurate and truthful.”

The 57-year-old Hollywood actor denied Heard’s claims of domestic abuse during their marriage on the first day of a three-week trial.

Depp accused Heard of telling “porkie pies” about his actions, which is slang for lying. He admitted to lashing out at things, claiming that it was preferable than “taking it out on the person I love.”

He described his relationship with Heard as a “constant barrage of insults, demeaning footnotes, and accusations of things that never happened.”

Lawyers for the newspaper group argued in court filings that Depp “beat his wife Amber Heard, causing her to suffer significant injury, and on occasion leading to her fearing for her life,” citing evidence such as photos, audio recordings, and Depp’s own text messages that will be presented at the trial.

As the proceedings commenced, the parties’ written submissions were made public. Depp claimed Heard repeatedly struck him in the face and partly cut his finger by hurling a vodka bottle in one witness testimony.

Depp allegedly took cocaine, drank Jack Daniels straight from the bottle, smashed bottles, yelled at Heard, pushed her against a ping pong table, and broke a window, according to Heard.

He stated, “These are fabrications.”

He denied that he had been physically violent.

“There were blackouts, sure, but in any blackout there are snippets of memory,” Depp said.

Depp admitted on Wednesday that he may have done things he doesn’t recall while under the influence of booze and narcotics.

“I may have done things that I have no memory of,” Depp said. But he insisted “I am certainly not a violent person, especially with women.”

Wass had questioned Depp about a private jet journey from Boston to Los Angeles in 2014. Heard claims Depp hit her and kicked her in the back during the trip because he thought she was having an affair with actor James Franco, but Depp denies attacking Heard or being out of control on the plane.

According to PA, Depp said in court that claims that he subjected her to “torture and other abuse” were “sick” and “completely untrue,” and that Heard was physically violent to him.

“The claimant’s position is clear — Ms Heard’s allegations are complete lies. The claimant was not violent towards Ms Heard, it was she who was violent to him,” Depp’s barrister David Sherborne said in a written outline of the actor’s case, PA reported.

The Pirates of the Caribbean and Edward Scissorhands star labeled her as a “calculating, diagnosed borderline personality” and narcissist who married him to boost her career in another statement.

The Sun’s defense rests on 14 claims of Depp’s violence made by Heard between 2013 and 2016.

Depp was questioned about his use of booze and drugs on Tuesday. Depp told the court that he began using narcotics when he was “very young,” when his family life was “not particularly stable, secure, or safe, and there was quite a lot of unpleasantness in the house,” according to PA.

Depp also stated in a statement that he divorced Heard after she or “possibly one of her friends” defecated in their marriage bed, which she dismissed as “a harmless prank.” It was the last straw in their failing marriage, he claimed.

Despite the fact that neither Heard, 34, nor Depp, 57, are on trial, the case is a confrontation between the former spouses, who accuse each other of being domineering, aggressive, and deceptive throughout their turbulent marriage.

The case has shed light on Depp’s tumultuous relationship with Heard, who met on the set of the 2011 comedy “The Rum Diary” and married in February 2015 in Los Angeles. The next year, Heard, a model and actress, sued for divorce and got a restraining order against Depp for domestic abuse. In 2017, the divorce was completed.
