Folks, Lady Gaga is an Academy Award winner. The best song of the year, “Shallow” from A Star Is Born, won her an Oscar at the 91st Academy Awards on Sunday night, making her the first music icon to win an Oscar.

Gaga expressed her gratitude to Bradley Cooper, co-writer Mark Ronson, and her family as she accepted the accolade. “If you are at home and you’re sitting on your couch and you’re watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work…… It’s not about winning, but what it’s about is not giving up. It’s not about how many times you get rejected or fall down or you’re beaten up. It’s about how many times you stand up and you’re brave and you keep going.”

Gaga is also the first individual to have Best Actress and Best Original Song nominations in the same year.

Lady Gaga follows in the footsteps of Barbra Streisand, who received the same prize for her A Star Is Born remake. In 1977, Barbra Streisand’s “Evergreen” won Best Original Song.

The film received seven nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Cinematography, and Best Sound Mixing. Gaga was nominated in the Best Actress category for her portrayal as Ally in the film.

The singer began the season after winning the Golden Globe for ‘Best Original Song’ for ‘Shallow’ in January. She collected the prize with her co-writers Andrew Rossomando, Andrew Wyatt, and Mark Ronson, praising their contributions to her accomplishment.

“As a woman in music, it is really hard to be taken seriously as a musician and a songwriter,” she remarked. “These three incredible men … they lifted me up and supported me.”

Lady Gaga was nominated for her first and only other Academy Award in 2016 for the song “Til It Happens to You,” which was written for the documentary The Hunting Ground.

The singer also sang the song at the 2016 Academy Awards, bringing 52 survivors of sexual assault onstage with her.
