This year, Selena Gomez is focused on her health. In a new interview, the “Wolves” singer, who just finished a mental health treatment program, spoke up about her continuing struggle with depression and anxiety.

She says that she is excited about what this year has in store for her. “Anyone who knows me knows I will always start with my health and my well-being,” Gomez, 25, tells Harper’s Bazaar’s Katherine Langford in the March edition. “I’ve had a lot of issues with depression and anxiety, and I’ve been very vocal about it, but it’s not something I feel I’ll ever overcome.”

“There won’t be a day when I’m like, ‘Here I am in a pretty dress — I won!’” she said. “I think it’s a battle I’m gonna have to face for the rest of my life, and I’m okay with that because I know that I’m choosing myself over anything else.

“I’m starting my year off with that thought. I want to make sure I’m healthy. If that’s good, everything else will fall into place.”

Selena also stated that, while she is always working to improve her mental health, she is not striving to meet her own or anybody else’s standards in her other pursuits. “I don’t really set goals, ’cause I don’t want to be disappointed if I don’t reach them, but I do want to work on my music, too,” she said. “My next album has been forever in the making. When people ask me why, I’m honest about it: It’s because I haven’t been ready. I mean, point-blank, I don’t feel confident enough in where my music is yet. If that takes 10 years, then it takes 10 years. I don’t care. Right now, I just want to be super intentional with all of the things I’m doing.”

Gomez also spoke to the journal on the need of distinguishing between her public and private lives, notably on Instagram, where she has a record-breaking 133 million followers. ” have a complex relationship with Instagram, to say the least,” she admitted. “It has given me a voice amid all the noise of people trying to narrate my life for me. … The only thing that worries me is how much value people our age place on social media. It’s an incredible platform, but in a lot of ways it’s given young people, myself included, a false representation of what’s important. So, yeah, it’s a complex relationship. Probably one of my most difficult relationships.”

Gomez says she’s no longer interested in going to “a lot of trendy places” and that her usual Saturday night might range from hanging out with her 4-year-old sister, Gracie, to heading to the casual dining restaurant Chili’s.

“I like going to nice restaurants, but I’m also into Chili’s. I love going to Chili’s and having queso and chips,” she says. “I also love dancing. I really do. I love looking like a fool with my friends.”

The “Bad Liar” singer, who underwent a kidney transplant from her closest friend Francia Raisa last summer, voluntarily entered herself into a rehab center in New York City for a two-week program in January, a source exclusively told Us Weekly earlier this month. “She always wants to be proactive,” the insider said. “She’s had a lot going on the last few months and she wanted to clear her mind and thought this was the way to do it. She loved it. She will be back at some point during the year.”

More of Gomez’s interview can be found in Harper Bazaar’s March issue, which hits newsstands on February 20.
