Recently, Selena Gomez made headlines when she responded to a TikTok about her weight during her relationship with Justin Bieber.
The TikTok in question was shared by a user @donttellmymomma.f, who showed a series of old paparazzi photos of Selena alongside a caption that read, “The reason why Selena is always skinny when she dates Justin.”
The clip went on to show a screenshot of an Instagram comment from Selena that hinted that Justin preferred to date models.
The TikTok quickly went viral and Selena’s reaction, a sad-face emoji, only added to the buzz.
Selena and Justin’s relationship was one of the most high-profile ones in the entertainment world, beginning in 2011 and ending in 2018.
It was a seven-year on-again, off-again journey that was followed by fans and media alike.
In her recently released documentary, “My Mind and Me”, Selena talked about her split with Justin and how it led to her self-love journey.
She said, “I text Julia Michaels and Justin Tranter and said, ‘I think I’m ready to just say I’m sad.’ We wrote the song in 45 minutes. The fastest song I’ve ever written.”
“It’s about more than a lost love,” she added.
“It’s me learning to choose myself, to choose life, but also hoping that people can find grace and peace in that too. The song is about knowing that you completely lost every part of who you are just to rediscover yourself again.”
Selena also talked about how the public nature of her relationship with Justin made her feel “haunted” by the past.
She said, “Everything was so public. I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of.”
Selena’s song “Lose You to Love Me” was a hit, and in the documentary, she said that the split with Justin was the “best thing that ever happened” to her.
However, the TikTok reaction has once again sparked a lot of discussions and debates among fans.
While some empathized with Selena, others accused her of stirring the pot by bringing attention to the past relationship in a negative light.
A lot of people on social media spoke up for Selena and said that it’s not fair for her to be blamed for speaking up about something that concerns her.
One person wrote, “The hate towards Selena for responding to a TikTok about her weight is so unnecessary… she’s been body shamed for about a decade, especially recently because of her lupus medication… she has every right to comment something regarding HERSELF and HER body.”
Another person wrote, “I don’t understand how a woman can be bodyshamed from the media down to the person she was in love with and yet still be the bad guy for speaking up about it, it’s really ‘we support all women and their struggles’ until it’s Selena Gomez.”
Hailey Bieber’s recent appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast also brought attention to this issue, as some argued that both women have the right to speak their minds about their relationships with Justin, positive or not.
This only highlights the importance of allowing women to speak up about their experiences and struggles without facing criticism or backlash.
