Jim Carrey will not be heading to trial this spring in an unpleasant court struggle over the suspected suicide of his former lover Cathriona White.

After his lawyer demonstrated that White had faked medical papers to try to claim that he had given her a number of STDs during their relationship, the case against him was withdrawn.

Following Cathriona White’s death in 2015, the 56-year-old actor was sued by her mother, Brigid Sweetman, and Mark Burton, her estranged husband. The Irish-born make-up artist had taken an overdose of prescription medications.

Carrey, who was set to go to trial this spring, filed a countersuit in September, alleging that the cases were an attempt to profit off his fame.

In a statement at the time, he said: “Unfortunately, I made the mistake three years ago of giving in and settling false claims made against me by Mr. Marchino [Miss White’s lawyer], on behalf of Cat, as mounting a public defence is a very costly and painful process. At the time I felt Cat was being exploited by Marchino.

“Since this new case was filed, I have discovered the depth of deception behind those false claims, the kind of deception decent people fall for, because to us, such behaviour is unimaginable.

“I will not give in a second time to these same fraudulent charges initiated by Cat’s husband in name but not substance Mark Burton, and her estranged mother.

“Nor am I responsible for what these desperate characters have inadvertently unearthed about the woman I adored. I was clearly blinded by my affection.

“Regardless, I will hold a place of empathy, and forgiveness for Cat and continue to focus on the many blessings in this life (sic).”

White had changed the information on a friend’s 2011 STD test to make it appear like it belonged to her, according to the actor’s attorney Raymond Boucher, before attempting to blackmail Carrey.

Boucher discovered that a 2011 paper claiming White had clean test results prior to meeting Carrey was a fake after conducting research.

Between March and August 2013, Carrey said that White threatened to “go public” with accusations that he gave her STDs unless she paid him “millions of dollars.”

He had already settled the charges with her for an unknown amount.

Mr Burton and Ms Sweetman claimed that one of the causes of Ms White’s emotional suffering was obtaining STDs.

She further claims that the actor, who is well known for films like Dumb and Dumber and The Truman Show, introduced her to “to cocaine and prostitutes”

A spokesperson for Carrey confirmed that the case was dropped on January 25, but had no more comment other than to remark that ‘Jim is looking forward to moving on with his life now.’

Carrey and White originally became associated in 2012 and dated for several years. After she was discovered dead in her Sherman Oaks, California home, the actor, 54, sent a statement to ABC News.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of my sweet Cathriona,” he said. “She was a truly kind and delicate Irish flower, too sensitive for this soil, to whom loving and being loved was all that sparkled. My heart goes out to her family and friends and to everyone who loved and cared about her.”
