In a lengthy and personal new interview, Prince Harry said he was trapped in a cycle of “pain and suffering” in the British royal family and hinted that he is heavily critical of the way his father, Prince Charles, raised him.

During an appearance on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman’s “Armchair Expert” podcast on Thursday, the royal son of the late Princess Diana said that his life is similar to that of Truman Burbank in “The Truman Show,” a 1998 Jim Carrey film in which his character’s life is televised through the lenses of hidden cameras while everyone he encounters turns out to be hired a hired actor.

“Yep, it’s a mix between ‘The Truman Show’ and living in a zoo,” Harry, 36, explained to the “Bless This Mess” performer. “It’s the job right? Grin and bear it. Get on with it,” he pressed when asked if he often felt encaged while being a royal.

“I was in my early 20s and I was thinking, ‘I don’t want this job, I don’t want to be here,'” he said. Before telling Shepard that his concern was that his pregnant wife Meghan Markle, 39, and son Archie would one day go through what his mother Diana went through during her time in the spotlight.

“I don’t want to be doing this. Look what it did to my mum, how am I ever going to settle down and have a wife and family when I know it’s going to happen again,” he bemoaned. “I’ve seen behind the curtain, I’ve seen the business model and seen how this whole thing works and I don’t want to be part of this.”

Harry described being a member of the royal family as a “heavy burden” that he struggled to bear.

Diana died in a traffic accident in Paris in 1997 at the age of 36 while being chased by paparazzi. The British royal expressed his concern that something similar would occur again in his household.

Harry previously said that the Royal Family cut him off financially at the start of 2020 after he revealed his intention to step down from his positions.

Last year, Harry and Meghan announced their retirement from royal duties, citing intrusions by the British media and discriminatory views against the duchess.

He blamed some American news organizations, but claimed they were better than those in the United Kingdom.

“When it comes to parenting, if I’ve experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I’m going to make sure I break that cycle so that I don’t pass it on.” he said of his childhood as a royal.

“It’s a lot of genetic pain and suffering that gets passed on anyway,” he said, “so we as parents should be doing the most we can to try and say ‘you know what, that happened to me, I’m going to make sure that doesn’t happen to you'”

And as Harry grew older, he realized that Charles had raised him in the same manner that he had been raised.

“I never saw it, I never knew about it, and then suddenly I started to piece it together and go ‘OK, so this is where he went to school, this is what happened, I know this about his life, I also know that is connected to his parents so that means he’s treated me the way he was treated, so how can I change that for my own kids?,” Harry explained.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex married in May 2018 and have a son named Archie, who is two years old. The couple is also expecting a baby daughter, and doctors urged Markle not to join Harry on his return to the United Kingdom after the death of Prince Phillip, citing flight safety concerns.

He is more free now that he and his family have relocated to California.

“Living here now I can actually lift my head and actually feel different,” said Harry, who added he’s able to take Archie for bicycle rides. “You can walk around feeling a little bit more free.”
