From “allrrrrighty then” to “that’s how the cookie crumbles,” Jim Carrey has a long list of memorable catchphrases. “There’s no meaning to any of this” is unlikely to enter their ranks, but coming from the star of “Dumb and Dumber,” it’s pretty humorous.

On the red carpet at Harper’s Bazaar’s gala celebrating Icons by Carine Roitfeld at the Plaza during New York Fashion Week Friday, Jim Carrey gave Catt Sadler of E! News and Daily Pop an unpleasant interview.

He started by circling Catt as though they were doing a little dance. Then he utterly trashed the Icons party to which he’d been invited.

“There’s no meaning to any of this, so I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join, and here I am,” he says. As Sadler attempts to pivot to something more traditional, Carrey presses the point: “I mean, you gotta admit it’s pretty meaningless.” “Do you believe in icons?” he asks her after she says the event is meant to celebrate icons.

“I don’t believe in icons,” Carrey deadpanned.

“I don’t believe in personalities. I believe that peace lies beyond personalities, beyond invention and disguise, beyond the red ‘S’ you wear on your chest, that makes bullets bounce off,” he said, paraphrasing a commencement speech he gave to Maharishi University of Management students in Iowa in 2014, when he was awarded an honorary doctorate for his contributions to the arts.

He also did a James Brown imitation during the bizarre meeting. While the actor and comedian seemed to throw Catt off at first, she retaliated by questioning why he’d dressed up for such a “meaningless” occasion, pointing out that he was wearing a fairly fine tuxedo jacket.

“I didn’t get dressed up,” he said. “There is no me. There’s just things happening.”

He went on to say that this earth is “not our world.”

“We don’t matter. There’s the good news,” he said.

The Mask star took to the red carpet at NYFW after a trip to the Venice Film Festival to promote his latest film, Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond – The Story of Jim Carrey & Andy Kaufman Featuring a Very Special, Contractually Obligated Mention of Tony Clifton.
